2 or 3-Person

This may have been discussed ad nauseum on this board and if so, I apologize. I just returned from seeing an old coaching buddy (I coached for 15 years prior to officiating) in Maryland. He told me they still use 2-person in Maryland which got me thinking . . .

How many other states are using 2 vs. 3 person crews? In WV, we use 3-person for all varsity games and many jv levels as well. Occasionally, you'll see a 3-person on the middle school level.

What do you use in your state?

In CO, it's three for most varsity (with the occasional small school exception) in the regular season. three in post season regardless. In some of the larger cities, they're using three person in sub-varsity to help build experience for younger officials. Middles school, normally 1 and a half.

I was going to say that I've worked with that guy (the "and a half"), but then I realized that I've also been that guy too.

I can deal with those guys, we were all there once. It's the ones that stay that guy that drive me batty. Then again, for $12.50/game....

I certainly hope you're taking $6.25 of his check!

I like your humility. Presumably, we've all been that guy.

Three Person officiating in our state is an individual school or individual conference decision. Back in 1998 was the first season our state used 3 Person for all playoff games in both Boy's and Girl's Basketball. That pretty much made schools and conferences use the 3 Person system so they would see the same thing in both regular and post season. Now there are still some conferences that use 2 Person, but those are very rare.

Peace

The state of things in Missouri are evolving in similar fashion to our friends from Illinois.

Officially it is up to the conference/individual school for regular season play.

A few years ago, Missouri went to 3-man crews in our larger classes (4,5), and as a result most of the large conferences (at least in the St Louis area) have followed suite, some faster than others.

This year the state is introducing 3-man crews in the smaller classes (1,2,3) during the playoffs. I would assume that the smaller conferences would follow suite over time, albeit probably slower than the larger ones.

Heck some of the smaller schools that I know of in the NE corner would hire 1-man crews if they could get a way with it.

I'm delighted to say that Utah is finally introducing 3 person. It's only for 5A boys varsity, but it's a start!

In Massachusetts I know of only one league, which consists of all boys schools, using three. Everything else is two during the regular season. The state tourney is three for all games.

In Western PA it is 3 person for league play and tournament play for boys and girls varsity. Most exhibition games are 3 person crews with only a couple of schools opting for a 2 person crew. Sub varsity is usually 2 person but a couple of the schools are going to 3 person at the junior varsity level for rivalry games.
