Throw-in ending

A1 has ball OOB for a throw in near half court.
A1 throws ball to A2 who was in his frontcourt, jumps and catches ball in the air and lands in the backcourt.

What is the order of occurrence when A1 catches the ball?

1. Player control
2. Team control
3. Throw in ends

--or--

1. Throw in ends
2. Player control
3. Team control

--or--

all 3 are simultaneous?

I'm having difficulty now (reading new case play) vs. why the above sitch could now be considered a BC violation.

Based on the throw in ending at some point, couldn't you justify by rule, that A2 committed a BC violation?

i.e
Throw-in has ended, PC and TC are established while A1 has FC status all while airborne.

What am I missing??

I would in this situation determine that first the throw in ends when A2 catches and controls the ball. At that point (In the air) no team control. A2 would establish his position in the backcourt and at that time would establish both team and player control.

There should not be any violation in this situation under NFHS rules.

The only way this is a violation is if A3 or B1 tips the ball prior to A2 catching it. In your scenario, all three events happen simultaneously.
However, if A3 or B1 tips the ball, the throwin ends prior to A2 catching it, and thus the "exception" does not apply.

Well, as you have it written, there is no violation.

I'm assuming you meant A2 lands in the backcourt?

Not exactly. Player and team control are established. For example, A2 is not allowed to throw the ball to a teammate in the backcourt until after he lands in the backcourt under the provisions of the throwin exception.

Yes, duh. I fixed it! Thanks!

All 3 are simultaneous. And, this *would* be a BC violation if the rules committee didn't make it one of the three exceptions to the rule.

Which case play is causing the confusion? I'm not sure what's different this year?

I can see A2 coming off a screen not knowing the ball was "slightly tipped" by B1 and thinking she has the power to jump from FC to BC witout violation. Also, the only official that may see the tip is the throw in official...is he/she gonna give the "tip" signal  so the players and other 2 officials know?

Frankly, I don't think I've ever seen this happen. So, it's not likely to happen next year. And, if it does, then the official handling the inbound is likely the official covering the division line.

CoachP makes some good points. So do you coach your players never to jump-catch (in FC and land BC) to receive the ball at a division line throwin, just in case it is deflected? stepping in the BC will not be a violation in either case for the throw-in.

I can see A2 and B2 both jumping at the same time from A's FC to BC. It's a steal or a violation depending on who catches it if B1 touches the inbound pass.

I gots some things to cover in a couple months!!! Usually, our OOB plays, A2 is already in the BC, but just in case.....
