I'm a first year official, and noticed last night while watching the Duke / Maryland game that in a multiple foul shot situation, the lead official would SPRINT into the lane as if shot out of a cannon, after the first shot, to retrieve the ball. What's up with that? Was the official just showing some hussle?

Yes, it's just good hustle. Where I officiate, we're taught that if the FT goes in the basket, you should catch it before it hits the ground. And since the Lead official is not supposed to stand inbounds during the FT, that means you have to hustle to get into the lane.

I don't think I look like I get shot out of a cannon, but I do catch a made free throw about 95% of the time (when there's another one to follow :eek: ), I'd guess.

I think it shows that the official is into the game and not just walking through the motions.

Seems like 5 of 6 made throws hit the back of the rim and carom away and toward the shooter.

Got that right! BTW on a 1&1 I cheat out a lot so that
even if I have a sudden urge to grab the rebound I'll get
there too late to make a difference. Not that *I* ever
would have this problem, mind you, it's just an extra
precaution. :p

I don't like it. I think a nice smooth quick walk looks more professional in my opinion. But again, do what your most comfortable.

When in Rome do as the Romans. I would say once you get somewhat established develop your own style and mannerisms as opposed to the robotic type looking ones everybody else wants you to use. However, do as the Romans do when your supervisor tells you to do it a certain way.

Besides knowing the rules, hustle is the one thing that I was taught can help you improve your game. Such little things as hustling in to get the made (or missed) rebound on a free throw, or even hustling when going across court before the opening jump. (Referee only) I think it gives a good impression that you are fired up, and ready for the game. Little things like this can show both coaches and fans that this game is not ho-hum for you. Plus, I think it gives you a bit of confidence in yourself. Remember, first impressions can go a long way.
