band/noise makers

NFHS 1-18
line one says music and sound effects can only be during certain times, and then line 2 says artificial noisemakers are prohibited.

Aren't those 2 lines contradictory? Doesn't the band use artificial noisemakers?

In practice what does the mean? The band can play during time-outs, intermission, ....--but can the fan with the cowbell/thunder sticks keep it if he only uses it during those sametimes?

The bottom line it is not allowed for any fan to have any kind of artificial noise maker under any circumstances. It is allowed for a band to play, but not during play and not to distract the opponent (usually the visiting team).

Peace

When you check, check the 2001-02 rule and case book. Megaphones are explicitly mentioned there.

No, they aren't. A band uses musical instruments to play during timeouts and intermissions. That's the only time music is allowed.

While bands use instruments, some use them in a way that make them indistinguishable from noisemakers!!!

If it's too loud, you're too old! :D

Often times, volume is irrelevant. It doesn't matter if they're playing out of key.

I assume you have once heard a school pep band NOT playing out of key? Otherwise, what is your basis for comparison? ;)

I've heard some play where you could recognize the song. They may have been out of key, but at least most of them were in the same wrong key.
I've heard some where they all sounded like they'd lost their sheet music in their airport luggage.

ROFL. My perception of band music has changed dramatically from the days when I was in the band, to now having a daughter in the band. But your pic struck me so funny because my girl is always kidding about a gong solo. I'll have to tell her about the gong show next time she mentions it (and perhaps explain why a "gong solo" might be appropriate at her next concert). :)
