Will someone please point me to where this is found in the rules and/or the case book. I've looked and looked and can't find it.

Problem, one of our young refs was on the court (small gym with no room on the sides) when he caught the ball. He said that since he was right by the sideline he figured that since the ball was caught chest-high that it would have gone out of bounds. So he called it so. Hister H. Monkey went nuts and now has written a letter to the league.

the official is part of the court. if he were to incidently catch a pass he should then look at where his feet are. if he is inbounds then he shoul just place the ball on the floor and play on. if he is standing out of bounds then a violation has occurred.

Thanks - Yes he missed the call but I can't find the were in the book(s) to reference it.

I think crew got it right but will add this. To save embarrasement you may want to consider falling to the floor and faking an injury. Best bet is to be alert and get out of the way though that is not always possible.

Guess I am lucky, only been hit by one ball and was standing OOB. It was a rocket pass that the young man chicken out on catching. Almost knocked the wind out of me.

Crew had it right--R4-4-4 in Fed book.Casebook 4-4-4 is relevant, too.

I agree with Crew and the above Rules and Casebook references. But I do have one problem with the official catching the ball in the original posting. If the official is inbounds when he catches the ball, we might consider the ball becoming dead in this situation and have to go to the dreaded AP Arrow.

Our association has "decreed" no black socks during the summer leagues -- only white. We have 1 official that wears knee-high white socks. Looks like a dork!
