I have to disagree to a point. You need to bug them to some extent if you want to work. And to tell the truth, they will only hire people that they know are willing to work. If you wait on them, they might forget about you just because they have so many people to deal with.

I think you should not bug them about doing certain levels, but if you need to send them stuff on a regular basis to let them know that you are open on certain dates, I see nothing wrong with that.

I find it interesting also that they complain there is a shortage of officials. I officiate three sports. Soccer is decently populated, but always looking for people. Swimming is short on officials, but that is something they tell me they always have been. And basketball - well, I have been a basketball official now for this season, and have done one game, with one more scheduled- the season has been going on for a month! In my area, basketball is extremely overpopulated, from my view. We have 15-20 new officials in our chapter this year, with another 15 or so that were rookies last year. Just my take on the situation.

That reminds me. I am reading a book about Michael Jordan. IT was saying that Phil Jackson coached a lot of years in the CBA and the Puerto Rico league before getting the assitant coaches position in Chicago. Now he is the most desired coach to have in the league.

About bugging the assignors. I would call your assignor when your schedule gets slow and ask if any games have become available. I have done that a few times with good success. Especially picking up JH games.

That's really a shame. I'm sorry to hear that. I've found it to be a great outlet for frustration, but also for learning from others' stories about what went well and what went badly in their games that week. We do our share of badmouthing coaches, but we also have the unusual situation in which several area coaches come to the same bar on Friday nights. So we even get a little coach-perspective during the evening.

Maybe the switch to diet Coke would help. Or maybe you and a couple of buddies could start a get-together at a different location and use it as a building experience.

Or maybe you could just go home and actually spend some time with your family ;)

Tim Roden. I see you've moved to Texas. What part/chapter? Fort Worth here.
