I think you have to be more specific than that. I think it depends on what he or she might say. I do know this, I definitely do not believe everything a coach says.

There's a statement that I can agree with.

If you believe a coach when he tells you that you made a good call, then you have to believe him when he says you made a terrible call.

I see your signature is "Whack! Get out! -Ronnie Garrettson" and that you are from North Carolina. Did you pick that because that is what Ronnie said to NC alum Rasheed Wallace?

For those of you who are not familiar with the quote, the word "Whack!" does not refer to Ronnie simulating the sound a T makes, but was what he called Rasheed before saying, "Get out."

Since I am in Portland, it seemed very appropriate. Most of us former Blazer fans are sick of Rasheed and his infantile behavior.

Maybe it's time to bring back the "Trade Whitsett" signs.

The quote below was made by a well-known basketball coach (obviously expressing his sentiments towards a particular ref) and I think it's amusing.

In response to the original query I make sure that my word is impeccable.

If a ref can't explain a situation and feels like he/she would have to lie to the coach or streeeetch the truth in order to respond to that coach - said referee is better off saying nothing at all. Coaches will remember what was said and if it turns out to be inaccurate or not true, that official will hear about it later (at least on the NCAA level).

Remember the golden rule, "You cannot misquote silence."

Without our word, we are nothing.

Jake, excellent point. A correlary (sp?) to that rule was stated by Gov. Michael Dukakis. I didn't particularly care for him as a politician, but he said

"Nothing is off the record."

You may think you're making a cute comment about a player or fellow official in confidence, but it will almost certainly come back to bite you.
