Why?

Just trying to see if you all feel the same way I do. I officiated a lot of basketball games the past 4 years. Every game, I pick something out I need to work in my game and I try to do it. Sometimes, it works, other times it doesn't. I like to think I'm a good official. I go out there and give it 100% because I know the players are.

People, i.e. fans, do not know how hard it is to officate a basketball, or any other game that they find joy watching. They are too caught up in the moment and forget to realize that we are human too. They will never know what it's like to do it for whatever reason.

Just recently, everyone has heard about Tim Donaghy and his problems. Now you may be for or against it, but when your a professinal referee, you should have a moral high ground. You should know that if you get caught doing something illegal that will hurt what little respect we have, it will only hurt all officials on all levels, The thought of a referee betting on games that he/she does makes my stomach turns.

I hope this situation will serve as red flag on who we hang around with. I hope we call can learn from Tim Donaghy and we can make sure that never happends again.

I feel you should "have a high moral ground" whether you are working the NBA finals, or 3rd grade saturday morning league. Our integrity is all we really have. And when any one of us fails to maintain that integrity, it reflects poorly on us all.

Actually, the NBA prohibits its officials from doing many things which are LEGAL as part of the contractual agreement. I don't agree with that, but understand why they wish to keep their people away from certain situations.

The primary example is legal gambling in casinos. NBA referees cannot go to a casino and play blackjack or poker, nor can they bet on NFL games or NCAA basketball games.

Furthermore, I don't believe that this has anything to do with morals. The NBA does it simply because it wishes to prevent its officials from becoming vulnerable due to developing a gambling problem or debts.

Interesting.

Anyway, according to a recently closed thread Michael Moore is only slightly less liable to tell a lie than GW Bush is. Good to know.

(And apparently I'm getting google credit for what Dan Rather says. Cool.)
