Our area has a number of officials that use a "double tweet" to indicate they are beckoning substitutes onto the court.
Is this practice occuring elsewhere?

We have one old-timer in our associaton that does that. Nobody else that I know of.

The other day I had a partner tell me in our "pregame" that he wanted to have a whistle on every sub that entered the game. It seemed to work out fine. Any thoughts?

Dan

For clarification...just one whistle "tweet"...no matter how many many subs at the table.

No tweet...

unless the buzzer doesn't sound...then, use your judgment. If it MIGHT be needed, blow it.

No Tweets for me.

The Table Officials have a job to do. Most table officials volunteer their time, some are still learning. A good pre-game with these people will help. We need them to be part of our team, when they are it makes our job that much easier. Before making the ball live:1)Check score clock 2)Check table for subs or approaching subs 3)Make eye contact with your partner. This can work both ways , your partner may not be in a position to see the table, so you cover #2 for him. Any comments?

If the official who is handling the ball(putting the ball into play)always looks over and is responsible for bringing subs in double tweets would not be necessary. Somehow we have got away from that technique which was taught to me 40 years ago by IAABO clinicians (Norm Van Arsdalen & Dr. Phil Fox)

I use a "double tweet" in my games. Could be because I learned it from the reffs willie speaks of. I think that a double tweet distingues that whistle blow from other whistles, so when my partner hears a double whistle, he won't put the ball into play, or he shouldn't. I dunno, take it for what it is worth, I am not sure if it is "correct", I doubt it is, but I think it helps my game.

I use the double tweet quite a bit. Usually not on beckoning subs however. My double tweets usually occur on
travels, if a player "unexpectedly" steps out of bounds.
Example;
Saturday, as player A1 steps back to shoot a 3 pointer, he stepped on the line. "tweet, tweet!"
As I said, certain travel situations,
as well as basket interference and goaltendings.
I think it says that something happened that stops what may look like a normal play from continuing.
Am I making sense?:confused:
