hello again friends
california boys varsity high school game two nights ago.
scorers table had room for only 3 persons - and naturally, the home team took all 3 spots.
visiting scorer had to sit too far away.
question
is this a "legal" set up?
i would think a rule would stipulate the table should have room for both team's scorer's.
thanks in advance

If it were me, my table would be.
Timer,home book ,visting book.
Who else from the home team needs to be there?
If it's a P.A. guy, make him sit behind the table in the stands.:(

Shot clock operator (I know, not everyone has one).

To answer the question I am certain the V book does not
have to be at the table, but they are allowed, so #26 was
OK. I can't give the rule right now, post it if you got it.

Dan,
Here in Utahr we ain't got no shot clock.;)

Mark Dexter Thu Jan 10, 2002 01:53pm

This setup is highly irregular, but I don't think there is anything the officials can do about it. I would suggest placing the visiting scorer in a chair right next to the table, as close to the scorer as possible.

Don't forget to write to the state association about this - the school will probably find a fourth spot rather quickly!

Per NHFS and NCAA Rules:

1) The Referee designates the Official Book.

2) The Official Scorer (usually the Home Book) is assisted by an Assistant Scorer (usually the Visitor Book).

3) The Official Timer: I really do not having anything to say here at this point but you need an Offical Timer.

The Official Scorer, Assistant Scorer and Official Timer should sit at the Scorer/Timer Table. The Referee can and should change the sitting arrangements. And as far as the announcer, like DrakeM said.

Mark, what rule(s) give the referee the authority to order a change in seating in this situation?

thanks for the replies
i guess i'm back where i started
rule book does not seem to address situation except for timer and official book - 2 spots
mark d uses the word "usually" which doesn't exactly strengthen my case of impropriety against the home team
oh well
thanks again
(sure do enjoy dropping by with my goofy questions from time to time)

I suspect he'll give the same rules references as I did...
we'll see.

NFHS R2-S3 (Referee's Authority) or NCAA R2-S3 (Elastic Clause) or FIBA R3-A6.9.

And I would have absolutely no problem with instructing game management to make sure that the visitor's scorer has preference to sitting at the Scorer/Timer Table over a team statistician (not sure of the spelling and I do not feel like getting up off my tukus to get a dictionary) or the public address announcer.

Are you sure of the spelling of "tukus"? :p

Chuck

Mark Dexter Fri Jan 11, 2002 11:56pm

My Yiddish is very rusty (and I think this is Yiddish), but I believe the word is spelled tuchus.

BTW, statistician was correctly spelled.

Mark T. DeNucci, Sr. Sat Jan 12, 2002 01:36pm

Yes, it is Yiddish, and you maybe correct about the spelling, Mark.
