Fight! Fight!

Simple question:

Have any of you worked a college or pro game in which a fight broke out, and had the assignor watch the game tape and say that you did everything you could do and placed no blame on the officials?

Just curious.

Yes...college level...punch out of no where. Turned out the two players were HS rivals and the antagonism went back to that. Absolutely nothing happened before that punch - watched the tape WITH the assignor...

Do you or anybody else have any first hand knowledge of a college or pro game in which a fight broke out, and the evaluator watched the game tape and blamed the officials for the fight breaking out?

Just curious.

I have never had a fight break out in any basketball game. I have had players get in each other's face but nothing where punches were thrown.

Peace

One fight during a game. HS player sucker punched his opponent out of nowhere.

Once had a ncaa game where there was a huge fight immediately after the game, didn't see it because we had just gotten off the court when it started. But I wasn't surprised to find out about it later.

Oh - also had a fight in the hallway of the hotel I was staying at for a tournament...two teams staying in the same hotel. Heard the ruckus and watched thru the peephole...does that count? I suppose we could blame it on the officiating - except they didn't play each other that day...but they had played earlier in the season - so maybe it was those refs fault??

Had a HS rec game once while working with The Immortal Dave. One girl intentionally scratched the other in the face (not kidding). The other girl then slapped the first one across the face. Dave tossed the first one and gave the second one just an intentional foul.

When I asked him about it, he said he was invoking the "chickfight rule". :p I asked him if that rule was in the rulebook. He said it was in his.

rocky - were you standing on a chair so you could look through the peephole?

I have never been involved in a sanctioned game where a fight has broken out. I have been at camp where pushing and shoving has ensued; one time the clinician specifically told the officials that they had done everything they could by calling a ton of fouls, but apparently it was going to happen anyway. The other time, I was not at that court, but I know the officials that worked the game still work in that conference. I do know that in both cases, the two teams involved had a history together, and didn't happen out of the blue.

I don't understand why certain people always have to resort to making personally derogatory statements about others on this forum. Moderators, please pull M&M Guy's account...please? Pretty please??

Oh well, since they won't pull your account, I'll just handle this myself:

I don't get it.

:) :) :)

Neither do I - JR made me do it.

Or, at least a voice that sounded like Jurassic.

I don't understand why nobody else heard that voice...

Trust me, with the right combination of medications, even week-old movie theater popcorn can taste pretty damn good!

No, but I've recently had a fight in a game and had only myself to blame (no video tape necessary). Some people think that every fight can be prevented, I'm just wondering if assignors feel that way.

I'm very very very new to the officiating game, so I'm just trying to learn.

Bottom line is that some assignors DO feel that way, but not all...and I would say that the ones who DO feel that way are looking for an easy way out of a controversial position. In other words, they work for the conference and the conference needs to keep the schools happy and the schools need to keep the coaches happy, so it's just easier to blame a fight on the officials and say something like "If only you had...". Personal opinion - that's crap. As a parent and as a teacher, I KNOW that my sons and my students are going to do stupid things - I can try to head some of them off, but some of them are going to happen no matter what I attempt...sometimes fights in a game are like that. Other times we can look back at the tape and say "How did I miss that"...either way though, the decision to fight comes down to those involved - if they want to go, they're gonna go...blaming the refs is pretty lame in most cases.
