There's been a lot of teasing (good-natured, I admit) about some of us having been around in the Naismith era. You are probably familiar with the Gen. McArthur quote that, "Old soldiers never die - they just fade away."

How about suggestions for finishing this thought, "Old referees never die - they just......"

Best answer (as judged by me, of course) gets to pretend he's Dave for a day.

old refs never die.. they just retire become members of the NFHS rule maker staff, come up with rules that have nothng to do with basketball.

More of a football one, but:

Old refs don't die - they just become replay officials.

1)Old ref's never die, the older they get the better they were!!!
2)... start to suck!

3)..."destripe".

4)wish they were young again!

5) (most scary) go to work in the announcers booth.

old reffs never die, they just reincarnate into newbies! Truthfully, I have found "old" reffs to be a valuable asset! for one, they tell war stories, and some can give you a different perspective on the game and teach you how to be a reff. Others, continue on and still officiate, even though they are OLD, there are a few of those in my area...:)

Although all the submissions were very funny, Paulis definitely wins for this remark. Obviously, this is a reference to the common problem men have in their old age of being able to easily perform certain body functions, plus the tie-in to the Fox 40 whistle.

Also, it recalls to mind the best advice I ever received from a veteran when I was just starting out: "Tuck your whistle in your shirt when you go to take a leak."

Congratulations, Paulis. Your prize is official permission from the home office in Tigard, Oregon to emulate Dave for a day. This emulation should take place during the next game you do. Please come back and post all your Davisms.

The magnitude of this honor leaves me speechless. I will make it my mission to live up to the responsibility so bestowed upon me. I would like to thank my fellow officials, the coaches and players and of course the fans. Also, mom and dad and the best thing that ever happened to me, my wife(who is currently upset with me for picking up a second game today when I told her I had just one).

In closing, let me share one tidbit from today's boys jv game: Coach is saying, "He's traveling!" To which I responded, "No he didn't coach, he has two feet! (Means nothing but it somehow shut the coach up - probably thought I was having a senior moment).
