Larks...It aint always about the benjamins! But they sure help sometimes! |
First, I'm from the old school and don't discuss money. My wife was curious as to the remuneration (go figure) and did some snooping and found in Texas the range is $20-$25 for Fresh & JV and Varsity anywhere from $28+gate to $60/game (2-man) and $40/game (3-man) - NOTE: that is from the chapter sites that would post the information.
Personally, I do it because I thoroughly enjoy it (in particular) and working with kids/young adults in general (besides, the excercise won't kill me). I also contribute several hundred hours a year working as a BSA leader and have paid a couple thousand dollars over the last few years for training, equipment, etc. (not including $2,000 for Nat'l Jamboree) to VOLUNTEER. I honestly think I would officiate for free (practically there now). I only track income and expenses so I don't get nailed on April 15. But then, I only aspire to go as high as HS varisty. |
I think we have had several such posts before, but what the heck, I'm bored. In Kansas, I have been paid:
Jr. High: from $15/game no mileage, to $28/ game plus .50 per mile one way. So I go to one school and get $30 and another and get $62 for the same work in the same league. May even be the same two teams playing. Junior Varsity: Usually $25-$30 per game plus from .42-.62 mileage. Varsity: I work in three different leagues and there are three different pay arrangements, I will list them from my favorite to work to least. #1 3 man crews work 2 games and get $75 no mileage. #2 2 man crews work 2 games and get $60 plus miliage (.45?) #3 3 man crews work 3 games and get $85 no mileage. Needless to say the third league gets the has beens and leftover dates from the officials. #2 is raising to $90 no mileage next year, supposedly, maybe that will make the others come up also. There is another league in the areathat I should be able to get some dates in next year and they pay around $100 for two games (3 man.) JuCo and small college: from $100-$175 generally, no mileage. |
In high school, I believe we pay them $150.00/person - 3 man, two games.

I am in Tennessee and this is the breakdown for the Nashville area:
Middle School: $25 one game $40 two games 9th and J.V: $30 one game $50 two games H.S. 2 man $40 one game $70 two games 3 man $35 one game $60 two games No mileage on any of it. I have found that I would gladly give up $10 to work 3 man on most of my HS games. |

I could be wrong, but that sounds correct.

However, in TX football, well, that's a different story. |
d-2 around 170$
d-1 between 450 and 1600 depending on conference nba- rookie season 90,000 + 10,000 bonus + perdiem(225 per day, give or take a few dollars). a tad over 1600 per game(based on 62 games-that is the average) |
In Texas you make $30 if no one shows up to watch your game. You make more if there is a gate. You could get $150 but that would be a huge crowd. Anything less than varsity you make $23 for the first game and it is a decreasing scale based on the number of games called.

football in texas can be very, very good to you

I am in VA and this is what we get paid:
Varsity - 3 person $45.00 regular season, $54.00 district playoffs and post-season, $60.00 regionals. JV - $36.00 (no playoffs, but sometimes Christmas Tourny) Freshman - $36.00 (no playoffs) Middle Schools - $31.00 for 2-person crew and $40.00 for 1-person crew We are also paid $25.00 for timing the varsity games. The timer will usually do the freshman/JV D/H and stay for the clock in the varsity contest. We have 3 or 4 varsity officials that are on the "injured reserve" list and they will usually do the clock if they want to. Our rec ball fees range from $23.00 - $30.00 depending upon age of players. |

Cali pay
In Southern Cal, we get...
Frosh/JV- $41/game Varsity- $52 JUCO- between $75-90 I also know that the Pac-10 pays officials $800/game (D-I, conference games only) The WAC, WCC, and other "smaller" D-I conferences pay around $650. I've never heard of $1600 for a college game-maybe including travel and per diem... |
All I can say is that I really need to get out of doing intramurals!

Down Under
Keep in mind these are Aussie Dollars (about 55c US) and that the quality of basketball is probably a little lower.
Australian basketball is grouped accourding to age (up to 23 years) and then by Division. All are two whistles. This is what we get paid for "Sydney Championship": U12 - (4x7 minutes, no shot clock) $8 - $11 U14 - (4x8 minutes, shot clock only in Div1) $10 - $12 U16 - U18 (4x10, shot clock) $15 - $22 These are State-wide rates, all games 4x10 minutes, 24 sec shot clock. Under 23 $28 - $40 Div1 Mens $48 - $60 Div1 Womens $40 - $55 Div 2&3 Mens $35 - $50 Div 2&3 Womens $35 - $45 Rates are slightly higher for finals, slightly lower for "round-robin" conferences. |
