...before the Duke-Kentucky game (just about to start)
they replayed Jimmy V's speech at the Arthur Asche awards in 1993. Wise words from a man who knew his time was up. Game just started, this is gonna be a good one! |
Wow! Pretty good basketball game for the middle of December!
It amazes me the crap that officials take at this level. |
Jimmy V. was a class guy. I can still see him running and jumping on the court after the Wolfpack won the NCAA. Great game -- now we know why Duke is #1.

I've been told one of my weak spots is game management / coach control. |
Obviously, we can't hear what the coaches are saying to the officals during TV games but I can't imagine that they're yelling about how great the calls are! :)
Also, there were several situations, on both ends of the floor, where subs and coaches were jumping off the bench when they didn't like a call, when they were signaling violations, or they were waving towels at the officials. Crap like that trickles down to high school. |
Heard a funny story about Jimmy V. on the sidelines one time. He asked the near official "You can't give me a technical for what I think can you?" The official unthinkingly replied "No". Jimmy V. proceeded to say, "I think you suck". The official said he got to laughing so hard he just couldn't wack him.

I love Jimmy V's story about coaching the Rutgers freshman team and trying to copy Lombardi's speech for his players...Lombardi told the Packers before his first game as coach - "We will be successful if you focus on three things: Your family, your religion, and Green Bay Packers football - in that order." Of course Jimmy V - as a 21 year old coach, was going to use that with his 19 year-old freshman, but forgot to change the Green Bay Packers to Rutgers Basketball...he was a funny and classy guy at the same time...
