Off-Topic: NCAA Volleyball Final 4

I've posted this on the extremely quiet volleyball forum, but I know some of you work both sports, so I'm posting over here too:

Anyone know why there is a third referee sitting behind the "up" official during the NCAA final four? Doesn't seem like he's doing anything productive-or is that the only spot they have for the guy not working the match???

Bad Zebra Fri May 04, 2007 03:55pm

What is this "Volleyball" you speak of?

tomegun Fri May 04, 2007 03:57pm

Matt, are you serious?

M&M Guy Fri May 04, 2007 04:11pm

Wow, it must be really slow on the volleyball forum for Matt to wander over here.

What are the odds the name Diebler will come up before the actual answer does?

Are you saying he sits up high, at the same level as the up official? Maybe, if (s)he is the alternate, that gives him/her the same look during the match so there isn't a big transition if they need to step in?

It's kinda like tetherball, but without a tether.

Geeze, guys, show a little respect. I too am an avid volleyball watcher.

Topless beach volleyball is my life!

Maybe the third official is there to smooth the sand after the ladies fall. Wouldn't want one of the l'il honeys to step in a hole and twist an ankle or sumthin'. Has he got a rake?

Did you know that the most common injury among the better-endowed topless beach volleyball players is an eye injury? Maybe the third official is actually an oculist? Or a pervert posing as one?

I wonder if Nevada thinks that the official that sits in a chair and points to an end every now and then should retire at 50 too?

Camron Rust Fri May 04, 2007 05:25pm

My "GUESS" is that they are tracking the movements of the Libero for each team. Volleyball limits the number of substituions. The Libero can go in/out as often as they like and without notifying the official as long as the player they come in for comes back in for them. The Libero plays in the back row....as a defensive specialist. It can get pretty confusing so someone has to track the ins/outs and for who.

Maybe Jurassic isn't lying when he says that he predates the invention of basketball.

It's possible, but I'm pretty sure he wrote that post from his hand-basket.

Diebler. There - I said it. :p

BTW - is there a FIVA? If so, how could we make fun of that acronym? Suggestions please.

Matt S. Sat May 05, 2007 11:05am

Ya know, a guy comes looking for a little info from some guys that hopefully like watching chicks in tight shorts, and this is what he gets!!!

Rut, you of all people should know how many guys cross over from bball to vball in Illinois!!!

Good one Mark, --Men's Volleyball!--Ha, I wonder how many people believed you. Men playing volleyball, just men, without any women, you crack me up.

IHSAref Sun May 06, 2007 10:13pm

there is no FIVA but there is PAVO

canuckrefguy Sun May 06, 2007 10:13pm

Seems to me some of the top players in the history of basketball were also avid volleyball players - Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem come to mind....

As for the OP's question - Cam's answer sounds rational.

Why would I know? I do not work volleyball or care about volleyball. I know people want me to do it because it is easy money, not for the love of the sport.

Peace

Yeah no kidding. At least post something that is possible.... that someone might believe. Geez. The next thing you know, somebody is going to create a post on here about soccer which is equally lame. Oh.

I got a FIVA. And the only prescription is. . . more cowbell!

FMadera Mon May 07, 2007 08:42am

I actually *did* post the answer to the 3rd referee question over in the volleyball forum...

So, let me get this straight. Not only did you post a relevant answer to the original question, but you didn't even bother to post an off-topic non-sequitor?!?!

This guy's account needs to be pulled!!

So, what's the real answer? Remember, you're dealing with naked beach volleyball fanboys here...

No FIVA, just FIVB. Not nearly as much fun.
