BOSS Officials in San Diego is always in need of
new refs for January through May and July-August.
We've been recruiting by word of mouth, local newspaper
public service announcements, posting fliers in gyms,
and even offering $$ incentives to current officials.
Anybody have other suggestions?
We are considering contacting the colleges, JCs, and even
some high schools, or holding regional recruiting clinics.

We have had success posting on local college job boards. Sometimes they want very specific information, like hourly wage, but we have found they will work with us. Officiating is ideal for a kid going to college because they are usually available nights and weekends, and they really need the $$. Plus - it pays better than making fries.

Like Mark mentioned, all (most anyway) colleges post job oportunities. I have a daughter in her junior year. She played ball her first 2 years of college and is officiating her first year of High School ball in Northern CA. this year for something to do..... Higher education hasn't made her any smarter I'm afraid.. :)

As Publicity Director for our association, I do several things:
1- Have the local newspaper's prep sports editor run recruiting announcements for us. I also ask him to interview officials of different sports for a story. He's very supportive of our association.

2- Run recruiting notices on the local cable access channel.

3- Recruit former high school players or current local college players. The use of college job boards is a good idea.

4- Recruit local coaches in different sports. Our volleyball clinician is a girls varsity basketball coach. One of our baseball umpires is also a wrestling coach and aa asst. football coach.

Increase Pay. Decrease the amount of games that have to be called at a time. Have a good mentoring system. Make officiating a positive experience for all involved. Pretty soon the newbies will be recruiting all their friends to come and join them.

I definitly think that asking around any colleges is a great idea. Perhaps you can contact the intramural department and find out who their best refs are. You could also check the Education Department for students weanting to be PE teachers. They'd probably love to learn how to ref. We are starting a continuing education class at our local college to teach newbies how to ref and supply them with some games and mentoring.

Intramural Refs
 

We received a large influx of officials by tapping into the college kids who were officiating intramurals. Our association then throws in their first year of membership in our association for free. It appeared to work quite well this year--for the 44% who passed the test in Indiana...

Many of the officials in my assn. are self-employed folk and are members of some kind of civic group (Kiwanis, Rotary, etc.) At the meetings for these groups, they are constantly looking for speakers and topics. I had some luck addressing my fellow Rotarians.
