The most fascinating story I heard from her during the Costas radio show was about Jackie's court martial in the Army.

Apparently, the Army had only recently issued an directive stating that soldiers could not be segregated on Army buses. Robinson got on the bus and sat next to the wife (who according to Rachel, looked white) of one of the men in his unit, towards the front. The bus driver directed him to move to the back, and he refused. The driver proceeded to make a stink of it, and an officer on the bus ordered Jackie to comply. He still refused. The driver went to the next stop and had Jackie arrested by the MPs.
He was court martialed for insubordination and eventually exonerated and given an honorable discharge.

I wonder if he would have been accepted and even signed by the Dodgers had he been carrying a dishonorable discharge with him.

I turned off the Sox/Yanks on Friday night after about the 6th inning. I got in a car and started driving home from Florida with my family. When I finally got into the NY area Saturday afternoon, I picked up the Saturday game on 880 AM. Susan Waldman was talking about second-guessing the Friday night game and how that play was the changing point in the game. And I'm thinking, jeez, they're talking like the Sox came back, but there's no way. . .

Sure made the last 4 hours of my drive go by easier.

Well, well, Mr. Annoying Spelling Guy, I believe she does not use that spelling for her first name.

1) How am I supposed to know how to spell her name from listening to the radio?

2) Totally off-topic, and mostly for Dan: Shana Hiatt is hosting the Nat'l Heads-Up Poker Tournament on NBC right now!! Must See TV!!

Well I must say that I left home (on Friday) around the 7th inning when I believe the score was 6-2...or something like that. After reading Chuck's post I had to go look up Friday's scores because I didn't believe him!

Don't you get the NY Sunday papers? Actually, I believe I read a story on her being a cancer survivor a couple of years ago or I wouldn't have known it was Suzyn.

I know you're all going to say "it's only April", but man, the Yankees look genuinely awful. They lose again at home and fall to 8-12. Their pitching is atrocious and they're pinning their hopes on getting Mussina and Pavano back? The bullpen is so bad that Torre has used Pettitte between starts twice already this month.

The Sox come up with another come-from-behind win and look ok, despite Manny and Papi slumping early. (Manny's batting around .185!) I hate getting sucked into being optimistic in April!

You walk the first 3 guys to start an inning and, gee, you think you might have some problems? Yankees get 4 off Dice-K in the 4th. Fortunately, Sox come right back against Pettitte. 6-4, but it's not over yet.

Wow...the Lions drafted another WR for their number 1 pick.

That steroid story that just broke out of New York today could very well be the year's biggest sports story before it's over. Apparently there is a pile of current and past Major Leaguers involved. The supplier agreed to co-operate too with both the prosecutors and the MLB investigation into steroid use.

Stay tuned......

Calvin Johnson, WR Georgia Tech [skills of Keyshawn, body of Terrell, work ethic of Jerry], threw out the first pitch at Comerica today.
It was high, ... way high.

[I had to find something related to the thread. ]

Well, that was fun. Five out of the first six go to the Sox. Papelbon looks great again. Ortiz hit a no-doubter into the 3rd deck, Manny hit one out, Cora hit one out and almost had a second one (had to settle for a triple). Manny only had one brain-fart (on the bases). Tavarez looked like himself (terrible), but the Sox won anyway.

Torre's probably going to take the blame, but he shouldn't.

BTW, anybody notice that the home plate ump was wearing a "livestrong" type bracelet, only it was black? Anybody know why?

Maybe it has to be something that does not draw attention. If he wore it above the elbow, it would be a problem, though.

Black wristbands are for hurricane Katrina (I know, you dinks in MA could care less about what happens south of Pawtucket).

Anyways...let's go Mets
