8th Grade game, Red team coach is harping on the majority of calls/no-calls (A constant annoynace, but nothing "over-the-line")...

End of game the coach comes to me, with ball in hand, and starts the dialoge, "Excuse me ref, but there is no such thing as a 'carry'". (I made an obvious "carry call" on his player late in the game.) I was so dumbfounded at his ignorance that all I could respond with was, "Check your rulebook coach".

BTW: His team won 49-16.

Isn't this fun!?:D

You're talking about Wisconsin rules.
You still wearing the green and gold striped shirts?

Last night before my game the visiting coach tells me he
heard "they" changed the charging rule, he wanted me to
verify it since he missed the coach's interpretations
meeting. Anyway, it turns out that the defender no longer
has to have his feet set to draw a charge. "Sure coach",
sez I, "that's how it works."

Really? You don't have to have your feet completely still? That's not what the players I ref tell me!!

BTW, with the carries, I had a few obvious ones last night (i.e., hand parallel to the floor with palm facing the ceiling) and the players were asking me how they had carried. The best comment: "This is basketball!!"

I wanted to come back with "I know what game we're playing, do you?" but I restrained myself - mainly because I didn't want to break down and start laughing.

It took all the restraint (professional demeanor)I had to not laugh at this coach.

What? You guys are not wearing Green and Gold-colored stripes? :D The "cheesy" whistles (Cheese-flavored) are the greatest, too! And when I am not doing basketball, I officiate Cow-tipping matches! :D

not quite a "Davism" but close....

"Coach, I can either call the game the way you want me to, or I can call it by the rules, but based on your comments so far, apparently I can't do both."
