3-official crews still news in Wisconsin
|
How about that horseless carriage!!!
|
just sent the link to everyone on our board and association here in Idaho, great article, supports my belief that all the excuses here are a bunch of bunk, 3 man is how it should be done, lots better calling angles, great mentoring for officials who get to work with more good officials during the year, much better chance to communicate with coaches, the list goes on and on

Coach was correct that during the season the 3rd guy is likely less familiar with the system. But if not during a real game, when are we to learn?

I agree. Also, we've had 3 man summer camps in our association for several years. Up until this year, we didn't do a lot of in season 3 man. Guys complained when they did 3 man in the summer, didn't do it again until the next summer, and had gotten away from what they were taught initially.
I think they had valid complaints. This year, we went to 3 man for virtually all varsity competition. I think in the next 2-3 years, they need to give serious consideration to doing it in selected sub-varsity HS games where schools agree to pay a little more and officials agree to take a little less to have 3 officials on the floor. We've still got guys that are good officials, but just not quite tuned into the 3 man system. |

Going to camp is a great way to get your feet wet with 3 man mechanics, but you don't get the repetition to build your habits. In one of the leagues I work, the majority of lower level hs games are assigned to 3 person crews, usually with at least 1 official that knows 3 person mechanics to be the R and do a little teaching. Some officials complain about the loss of money (you still only get paid what a 2 man crew would), but if you want to move up and work varsity, you have to learn the system.

I just can't see a time in the near future where the entire state will be all three whistle crews. Frankly, some of the smaller schools (Div 4) don't need it. I would estimate that after approximately 15% of my games this year, I thought "Boy, it would be nice to have had a third official." While I certainly wouldn't mind going to all three whistle, there isn't much grumbling up north for implementing it. |
Here in SE Wisconsin at least 3 conferences will be 3 person next season for all boys and girls games. Agreed that some of these game really don't need 3 but you really can't be selective. The past 2 years there have been camps and summer leagues using 3 person but during the season it's hard to work, commissioners won't let you on conference games. I can't wait until we go 3 person for every game, I love it.

I think we need to paint a line somewhere. |
We need 3 out her in CA. May get it next year or at least experiment with it.
