Cool Thanks all and Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks to all of you who offered advice. This isn't my first varsity game, or the biggest for that matter, but it's the first with someone who has inherent philosophical differences in how the game should be called. I'll take your advice and let you know how it went.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

Having read all the threads I would say I have to agree with Dan ref in this situation. Have a good pre-game with this official- mention that you have watched him before and that you usually call things tighter. Ask him how he identifies and reacts to the flow of the game. LISTEN closely to what he says cause you will probably learn something valuable. After all said and done call what you feel is absolutely necessary and let everything else go that does not create an advantage to either the defense or offence. Look for things not to call. No Calls are often your best calls of the game. Have fun!!! Good Luck and let us know how it went.

I guess you are moving up very quickly! How many games have you done? I guess if I were a Coach I would ride you hard to see what you are made of, if you are only worried about what your partner ( seasoned ) is going to call! A GOOD pre-Game is very important to ask questions about certain floor coverage and calls you tend to make in areas outside of your coverage. Keep up the good work and don't get in over your head with too many BIG games!

Lightbulb Something to ponder...

When you are a young official, it behooves you to take notes on EVERY official you work with. Note the good ones, the bad ones, the ones who mesh with you, the ones who don't, etc. This way, you'll know what to expect and how to evaluate your own game. You'll also find out who you work best with...do you work best with a "rules" partner, an enforcer, a "let 'em play" partner, a tight partner, etc. Note EVERYONE you can!

This is my fourth year...I have notes on EVERY official I've ever worked with that is in my association. I know who the good ones are...and I know who I don't click with...and I know what their goals are.

Now, while I'm working my behind off to get into the state tournament, I know who to call on to go to that new gym or to call a game in front of that new coach that may or may not break my getting into the tournament.

To me, it's all about finding someone who is a great compliment AND contrast to your own style!
