Subsitution

During a dead ball, Team A has 5 new substitutes enter the court. Before the ball become 'live', Coach A wants S6 to replace one of the 5 new players. S6 was on the bench when the 5 new players entered the game. Ref denied S6 into the game. Was he correct?

I don't have my books with me, but are you sure? The rules only specify that a replaced player has to sit out at least one tick. There's nothing that says a new player must play a tick. As long as S6 wasn't one of the original 5 on the floor, it's legal IMO.

the official may not have been correct

Assuming the OP is accurate the substitution should have been allowed

The way I understand it as written is once the substitutes enters the game any others who desires to enter must wait. My dialogue would be that S6 came from the bench after the initial five entered the floor. Thus, he/she must wait.

what leads you to this conclusion....the only limitations on "sitting out" refer to a replaced player.

I agree, the substitute should be allowed. A player who legally enters the game during a dead ball may leave the game during the same dead ball period. I stand CORRECTED!!!;)

As long as subs can still enter, let'em in. Sub should have been allowed to enter according to the OP.

Nevadaref Thu Mar 01, 2007 07:38pm

The sub should be allowed unless the ball is about to be put in play, then the sub should be denied.

I see what you're saying, but this would only be a factor if, as Nevada says, the ball is about to be put into play. It's not uncommon for a coach to send two subs during the same dead ball, separately. We don't make them wait when that happens as long as the 2nd sub gets there in time. There are lots of times when a dead ball may be extended unnaturally that would lend themselves to this kind of situation.

That would be nice, but unfortunately there is no such NFHS rule.

The only way the sub could be denied was if the 45 second horn (or 20 second horn) had blown. Then it is too late by rule...

There was a test question on Part I this year on swapping subs like this.

I just heard the simple way to remember this rule...."you can always leave, but you can't come back in".

Short, sweet, and to the point......

Kelvin, this situation was NOT following a time-out or intermission according to the OP.
