monitor rules revisited

Mich St. / Michigan game on right now. 15:04 remaining in the first half.

Referee: Steve Welmer; Umpires: Donnee Gray, John Higgins

Welmer just went and checked the monitor to decide which Mich St. player fouled on the play. The monitor showed that it was #2 and this was not the player that was originally charged with the foul.

It is my understanding that using the monitor for this is strictly forbidden by the NCAA rules.

2-5-3...
The officials shall not use a courtside monitor or courtside videotape
for judgment calls such as:

a. Who committed a foul or whether a foul occurred;

Any thoughts or opinions?

wasnt like there was a scrum

probably reported as #whatever and then realized hey he wasnt even close to the play and i forgot who was.

i read that differently i guess -- i would take that as lets say 2 or more players are involved in contact they cannot go to the monitor to decide who gets the foul.

Also, I thought I read somewhere that when the horn is sounded to bring in subs or for a timeout, that the backboard LED lights shouldn't light up?

yup him and Old School -- that way they cancel each other out so you are pretty much on your own.

Then, yes, if I was the Referee, I would forfeit the game.

That's my understanding also, for whatever that's worth. But if Steve Welmer tells me he's going to the monitor, then I guess that's what we'll do.

Unless it was Jon Diebler. Then she'd be thrilled. Thrilled, I tell ya.
