Intentional Foul

Maybe you guys and ladies can help? During my son's 8th grd. CYO game a situtation occurred I had never seen happen before. My son's team (team A) was losing big, down 15 and had no hope of getting back into the game. The other team (team B) stole the ball and had a fast break the other way. Player A fouled shooter B(airborn shooter) during the layup. Basket counted and Player A was accessed Intentional foul. Correct call and I agreed with it. Shooter was awarded 3 free throws and the ball. For my information, is this the correct administration of penalty?

Intentional foul. The player that was fouled will shoot 2 free throws and their team will get the ball OOB at the spot of the foul. Now if the player was shooting a 3 point shot, and it was missed, then the player that was fouled will shoot 3 free throws.

Sounds like a local CYO rule may have been in effect (which this forum absolutely hate) or the officials errored.

Yes, even if the original try counted, 2 shots. If a 3 pointer was shot and made, still 2 shots (3 if missed as already stated)

The basket is good, he or she gets one shot for the foul and then 2 shots for the intentional and the ball at the spot of the foul.

If the basket is counted, Team B gets 2 points for the basket (on a layup), 2 shots for the intentional foul (yes, even though the basket counted) shot with the lanes cleared, and the ball OOB nearest the spot of the foul.

The intentional WAS the foul, though, so shouldn't she get just 2 shots?

Case play 4.19.3 Situation A (a) basket counts, 2 free throws for the intentional, ball to B OOB nearest foul. No and 1 due to the intentional 2 free throw penalty. Others had it right but I thought I'd include the Case Play.

4.19.3 SITUATION A: B1 is charged with an intentional foul on A1 who is in the act of shooting: (a) a successful two-point or three-point try; (b) an unsuccessful two-point try; or (c) an unsuccessful three-point try. RULING: In (a) and (b), A1 is awarded two free throws. In (c), A1 is awarded three free throws. In all situations following the free throws, Team A is awarded a throw-in at the out-of-bounds spot nearest the foul.

Sorry, my mistake.....see above.

Thanks for clearing this up. I thought at the time 3 free throws were excessive, however I wasn't a 100% positive. I just signed on yesterday after reading and following the topics. It is refreshing to see people willing to help and impart their knowledge. :) Looking forward to discussions in the future.
