Am I shooting myself in the foot?

I'm currently a second year university student, been officiating for 6 years. This year at my university I've started working for the department of athletics running the intramural basketball league (running the league and training and assigning the officials).

Now for next year, my boss wants me to get more involved in the department of athletics taking on responsibilities that could include varsity sports event co-ordination among other things.

Now I have goals to progress to the inter-university levels in both sports I work (football and basketball).

My question is, from your experience, is getting this involved with my school's department of athletics going to hurt me in my quest to become a college official?

You may have some choices to make. But remember that one is a vocation and one is an avocation.

Not necessarily. There is a men's Division 1 official who is the athletic director at a Division 1 school. Rick Harzell of the University of Northern Iowa. Two extremes, but it shouldn't be a hinderance.

Au Contraire. From a political standpoint, it will do nothing but help you.

Nope. I know a guy that officiates 3 sports in college -- football, basketball, and baseball -- and he's an associate director of something or other in the athletic department. He even does Tuesday night (i.e. non-conference) baseball games for the school and has for years.
