History Of Officiating

hey guys,

I am doing a paper on the history of sports officiating. were there always reffs? if not, where did they come from and who thougth of having them? Does anyone know where I can find some more information on this? Thanks

I would check with your local HS coaches. They seem to know all the rules and mechanics, so maybe they will know the history as well.

Right on, coaches know the rules... or at least they think they do. but, when asked what color the rule book,at least in wi, they dont' know. Coach, it is only a game...

See my post below on how the game has changed. It indicates that the first game ever played had a referee and an umpire. Apparently, Dr. Naismith thought of having them. In fact, I have attended his clinics.

I don't know of any "historical books" on officiating, but there are sever biographical and autobiographcal books about officials from a variety of sports. One of my favorites is called "Somebody Stole the Pea out of my Whistle". It is about high school basketball officials in Indiana, and has some hilarious anecdotes about some of the interactions between officials and fans, coaches, and players. It is amazing the things those guys were able to get away with about 20-40 years ago that we only wish we could get away with today.
