What would you do?

High school girl's varsity game. Extremely small gym. Home coach and crowd (no doubt following the spirit of the home coach) are quesitoning every call. Game very close. I'd T'd the coach with about 2 minutes left for coming after my partner on a foul call he made. (He claimed he was just yelling at his players, but I didn't believe him.) I make an out of bounds call on a home player with 22 seconds left in the game. A group of boys sitting behind the home bench, who have been particularly rowdy all game, start chanting loudly, in unison, "We got screwed! We got screwed!"

What do you do, if anything?

Raymond Mon Jan 29, 2007 03:38pm

If you determine that loud chants of "WE GOT SCREWED" is offensive and out-of-line then have Game Admin address the offenders.

Or you could stop the game and give them the THE STARE. ;)

Nothing at the time, but a letter or email to the AD would not be out of the question. At our school, an admistrator would be on top of them in a second and have them removed. At some schools the administration does not care. That is a sad situation when it occurs in a HS. College is different.

And put the ball in play and be off the floor in 23 seconds......

What's so different about college?

At U of Md mens program a few Yrs back the school took it into their own hands and refused to play a certain "song" when the "fans" started chanting off color verbiage in certain places...... Even Gary Williams took the floor and told them to show more class....

In Michigan, officials can write a "Letter of Concern" to the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
"Letters of Praise" are also accepted. ;)

Referring to the "Hey!" song?

Dan_ref Mon Jan 29, 2007 08:06pm

You do nothing.

But if they were truly rowdy all game...you should have taken care of it much, much earlier.

If they were just annoying...enjoy the show. You probably did screw 'em! :)

Texas Aggie Mon Jan 29, 2007 08:31pm

I don't get this business about taking care of it. What's to take care of? It isn't vulgar. Maybe a bit distasteful, but hey, they have free speech rights. If the administrator wants to deal with it, they can, but I'm not doing anything about it, first minute or last.

You are misusing the "Right".
In the case noted, "Free Speech" does not apply.

The referee has the freedom to have them silenced (by having them removed) and that trumps their right to free speech.

Note....I'm not saying the referee should have them removed...just that they could.

Lotto Mon Jan 29, 2007 09:02pm

OP here...I asked the AD to remove the chanters from the gym.

Every game in this area starts with a speech read over the PA system about good sportsmanship on the part of the fans. I felt as though the chanting of "We got screwed!" was an egregious violation of that statement and warranted action. That having been said, I might not do the same thing---with 22 seconds left in the game, getting done and getting out might be the best strategy.

bronco Mon Jan 29, 2007 09:54pm

IMO, the kids should be removed for not using the first part of the cheer. "Nuts and Bolts, Nuts and Bolts."

The first time I heard that, it was at the state tourney when I was in MS, and everybody from our school's section was doing it, adults and parents included. Needless to say, my HS never won much in the way of sportsmanship awards.:o

Free speech isn't relevant here. I'd most likely ignore it; but it's not about "free speech."

Have we as a society become so mindnumbingly stupid as to believe that "free speech" really means that anybody can say anything they like, any time they like, any where they like, and there is never any recourse? A whole bunch of people need sent back for a remedial civics lesson. But before you go, let me tell you what I really think...

Ray, you really need to stop holding it in; it's only going to hurt you in the long run.

This is the same (very large) group of people that believe they (or their children) have an inalienable "right" to play youth team sports, and then intramural team sports in college.
