Where do they learn this?

Last night I worked a freshman double header with one of my varsity partners. We were supposed to be working with a 3rd (new guy learning 3 man mechanics) but he had to drop the game. Anyway, at the beginning of the 2nd quarter of the 2nd game this woman in the crowd had a really serious look on her face like something really bad was going on. She respectfully called me over with and "excuse me sir". She seemed to be calm and the game was going fine so I went over. In all seriousness she informed me that #13 was chewing gum. I said...."and?" She replies that she thought that was illegal. I assured her that as long as it was gum and not tobacco we didn't have a problem. Where do fans get this stuff?

Maybe she heard the urban myth about the little leaguer that was chewing gum and got hit by a pitch while chewing gum...he was so excited that he sucked in, got the gum lodged in his throat and choked to death. That was presented to us by the Local League president at the umpires meeting...so that year, we went on an anti-gum crusade. He read it on the internet, so it had to be based on fact.

It's not that chewing gum is illegal, per se. It's that he didn't bring enough for everybody.
