How does your state view ThunderStix -- are they prohibited artificial noisemakers, or not?

The first year the artificial noisemaker rule came out, our state association gave them out at the state tournament. They were since banned. On another subject, what about megaphones?

I think Mi. banned any type of artifical noisemaker (could be in err here). One year the kids came up with rocks(marbles) in a can. One item that gets everyone going is the TP coming out of the stands after a 1st made basket. That only happens on special games and is usually a big secret until it happens.

Does any state allow thunderstix in high school games?

I thought that would be a no-brainer.

Wisconsin issued a clarification in their bulletin allowing these things. They suggested that students "not use them during free throws."

I wonder if the AD at a game I worked earlier this year submitted the question. I disallowed them because I (incorrectly, I guess) considered them artificial noisemakers. I honestly thought I was on pretty firm footing. Still do, but I'll follow the rules I'm given.

Well, I guess Wisconsin can make any ruling that they want. It's my understanding though, same as yours, that they're artificial noisemakers and are banned completely under NFHS rules.

Whatinthehell else could ThunderStix be called except an artificial noisemakers? That's exactly what they are.

I agree....but just to play the DA....


Just about any object brought into the game is capable of making noise. Do you make the fans leave everything at the door....even some parts of clothing that could make noise.

What about banners, flags, popcorn buckets, belts? All of them, when hit together or on the floor or bleachers will make some noise.

Could the thinking in some states be related to the visual use of them with the expectation that they'll not be used for making noise???

Illegal, as far as I know. I would certainly consider them artificial noisemakers. I even stopped fans from using them in a college game once. Never heard anything negative from it.
