Just about any object brought into the game is capable of making noise. Do you make the fans leave everything at the door....even some parts of clothing that could make noise.

What about banners, flags, popcorn buckets, belts? All of them, when hit together or on the floor or bleachers will make some noise.

Could the thinking in some states be related to the visual use of them with the expectation that they'll not be used for making noise???

What are you, starting law school? You're getting way, way to inappropriate-pivot here.

Megaphones

Did we ever come up with an answer in this thread about cheerleaders with megaphones ? I think that the NFHS would deem these to be artificial noisemakers and thus illegal. What's the opinion of this Forum ?

P.S. I've had more problems with cheerleaders over the past few weeks than with coaches, players, or fans. In one case I asked the cheerleaders, who were lined up in a ninety-degree angle around the baseline and sideline, to back up a little. One of the girls asked me with a "snotty" tone in her voice "Why ?". I explained that they were in my way, and they reluctantly backed up. Last night, the cheerleaders came on the floor during the first thirty-second time out. I waited until they were done with their routine, and politely asked them to not come on the floor during a thirty-second time out. One said, again with a "snotty" tone, "Since when ?". I explained that the rule was clarification this year. Another politely asked me how they would know the difference, and I showed them the two signals. I am not anti-cheerleader, my daughter was a basketball cheerlaeder in college.

The NFHS has spoken in the past regarding megaphones. As long as they're used as designed, they're permitted. In that regard, they're not making any noise whatsoever, they're just directing the chearleader's voice more effectively in one direction. If they are used to pound the floor, they're not allowed....they're actually part of making the noise.

This is correct as long as the megaphones are just big plastic cones.

They are illegal if they are electronic and amplify the voice in that manner or play sound effects.
