How Many Games?
Just curious as to the number of games everyone is assigned during the regular HS season. We are short of officials in central Florida, so we usually get as many as we are willing to take. This year, it looks like I'll finish with 32 Varsity and 3 sub-varsity. Varsity qualified officials are in higher demand, thus more games are available to work if qualified.
What's the workload around the country? |
24 Varsity
5 JV 1 Fresh/Soph (I limit my availabity. Many officials in my area work at least twice this much.) |
So far 34 varsity, 7 sub varsity with 2 weeks of schedules to...that means at least 4 more varsity plus a couple of sub varsity.
|
Wisconsin.....
- 35 Varsity - 5 JV - 1 Soph - 1 Frosh I basically work HS Varsity. The sub varsity games are "pick-up" and usually are to help out an AD or Conference assignor fill a spot. |
I had to close out a few dates in December and my assignor is making me pay for it in January. I'll probably end up with 22-24 games then I should get 3-5 play-off assignments. My schedule is all varsity about 60-40 in favor of Boys.
|
I have about 70 total games... about 37 dates, with some AD's asking me to pick up others... which I willingly declined, so I have the chance to actually go WATCH some basketball lol... even though I end up watching the officials more than the actual game :D

At the half way point
Half way through the season, I have 41 assignments.
19 are Varsity. 21 JV and 1 set of Middle school games ( 2 games in a set ). I also do chrch league 7th to 12 th graders and I have done about 9 of those games. so, I am at about 51 total games. I could easily hit 100 games this year. |
Texas -
49 - Varsity 30 - JV 2 - Soph 11 - 9th 33 - JH (I like to work with new guys. It is my way of repaying my debt for those veterans who helped me along the way.) 18 - Rec League Some other stuff thrown in. Total for this season: 175-185. Last three years combined . . . About 600-625 games, 13,000 miles, and 5000 gallons of gatorade! :D |
A lot! Too much! We do girls and boys Varsity every night. I actually like doing a college game because the travel isn't much worse and I only have to do one game (men's) for more money.
|
I limit myself to 35 games or so each season. I could do more if I wanted to be single...again...for the 3rd time. Many guys work 55-60 during the season. I have done 5 scrimmages and will do 29 JV & 6 varsity by the season's end. The varsity games are 3 DHs.

100+ already. At least 20 more.

I have to force myself to do it, though, when I'm watching to pick up keys from the varsity refs on how they want things done here. You know, how tight to call the game, where to stand during certain points of the game. |
Not half way through the High School season yet. 44 Rec games, 7 Middle School games, 3 C games, 8 JV games, and 32 Varsity games. Not working at present so I have lots of free time and my Wife scores so it works out well.

AAU - 10
Middle School - 19 (most times it's three per date) JV - 15 Varsity - 4 This is through January; February's officials' schedule comes out this week here. Not quite as much ball as I worked in Iowa. |
I am amazed at how many varsity games some of you get. In my area, almost all high school games are played on Tuesdays and Fridays and there are only 20 games in the season. Varsity double headers are unheard of. Typically, the boys play at home while the girls play the same school away. There are relatively few chances to work on other days, although I know one guy who picked up another 12 games from an assignor who has Monday and Wednesday games. I had a Friday game moved to Thursday last week and it took almost no time to get another Friday game -- since there are so few officials not scheduled on Fridays.

Womens College : 46
High School Var (Boy and Girls): 45 JV or Frosh: 8 |
I do about 60-80 games a year all middle school age travel games and AAU. Once I started coaching I gave up all my high school games.
BayState, Do you do any games for Larry in the NEC/Cape Ann League? |
Actual High School games for a season that extends from after thanksgiving to the third week in February:
This year I am doing 45 games. Mostly JV with a few Varsity games mixed in as I am in the process of transitioning to the varsity level. I also do a smattering of CYO games on weekends (3-4 at a time) for a total of another 15 or 20, including the diocesean championships that are three person mechanics. Starting the end of March through The Middle of May, I will work 4 AAU games a weekend for approximately another 30 games. Starting in June, I work one specific high school summer league through the third week in July for another 50 games or so. That totals about 140 - 150 games a year. Holy Crap!!!!! Where did all the money go???? |

24 Varsity
11 Junior Varsity 2 8th Grade 1 College Junior Varsity That is the schedule from December to 1st week of February. I could have worked much more but I try to give my legs a rest once or twice a week. |
I am amazed at some of the workloads. I'm also surprised there aren't more threads about knee replacements.
|
Wow, I thought I worked alot until I read this thread. I work about 50 dates this season, Varsity every Tuesday, Friday and a handful of Saturdays. JV/Freshman games every Monday and Thursday. I work a handful of JUCO women's and College JV Men's as well. I meant to take far fewer games, but it didn't happen again this year. I meant to dump HS games that weren't varsity, but I have a hard time saying no to some of the AD's I've worked with for a long time. Besides that, I can either sit on the couch and relax or go out and make a little extra money on non-varsity nights. Since I'm an underpaid teacher :) , I choose to go work.
