Reffing bad teams

Sometimes I think we get caught up in officiating the "best" teams with the "best" players battling for playoff spots in their district. Although, the games are exciting and it is a rush to work a hotly contested game, sometimes you get a game that sets basketball back fifty years!

I had two tonight. One boys and one girls. They called it "varsity"! It didn't look like it! Funny thing is though, I had more fun tonight than I've had in a long time. The kids were great, they played hard despite lack of talent and the fans and coaches were just happy when their player actually executed a play without a violation!

We have to realize that no matter the talent level, these games are just as important to these kids as the big games.

We had fun with the games. The kids had fun and everybody showed good sportsmanship. That's really what high school basketball should be about I think.

Dave,

If you are realistic with yourself, most games are not with the top teams. Many of my games are very average teams or no one is going to play college after they graduate. If you work enough games, that is going to be the case. Also many of the games you work where you think is going to be a barn burner, they end up being duds. Then the games you think will be very boring end up being the best games of the year. If sports were predictable it would not be so fun. ;)

Peace

Dave, There are no bad teams, only bad officials. Don't you ever listen to the people in the stands?;)
