Over the past 18 years, conflict over, those that are Varsity qualified and those that aren't, has been ever present.
In Southern California, we are given a 200 question study guided to do at home. 100 questions are extracted from the 200 and this becomes our classification exam. So memorization can play an important role in passing the exam. Participants are given 3 chances to pass it.
Last season got pretty nasty to the point that "Good Old Boy" and "Racial" remarks surfaced from some of those not considered "Varsity" qualified.
Aside from the exam, what other "objective" metrics are used out there as guidelines to achieving a "Varsity" rating.
We'd like to try and make it as clear as possible to our Chapter members, what the criterion is/will be for consideration to a "Varsity" rating.

The only thing that makes us qualified is if an assignor or a AD wants to hire you. Chapters, officials associations, or any other outside factors play no part. If you are good in the peoples eyes that do the hiring, you can do varsity, that simple.

Now getting playoff games is a whole other story, based on ratings and rankings. But you did not ask about that so I will not go into that aspect of it.

everyone on the association must get a 70% or better on the NFHS test in order to officiate school ball.

Do you have any fitness requirements? I.e. Must be able to run down a court and back a given number of times in a given time frame?

Does anyone see a problem with making this type of test a requirement within any association that choses to implement it?

If this type of test were a requirement, what would you guys/gals think is reasonable....

Having used to work in Seattle, I can tell you if the referee isn't physically fit, it has an obvious effect on observations. If you're not fit, you're more likely to be out of position, etc...

But being able to meet some physical standard is not part of the ranking process.
