Here's a funny (or not so funny) one for you on how some people think. I was keeping clock in a tournament of local Lutheran grade schools. It was the championship game, and the first place team had won for the last few years. The coach was known for being unpleasantly vocal. Whenever he wanted a call and started his whining, the woman keeping their book next to me (turns out it was his wife) would say, "You're never going to get that call." After she said that about three times in the game, I finally had to ask her why she was saying that. She just shook her head and said, "Well, when you've been on top as long as WE have, everybody wants to see you lose."

She actually believed that the refs were part of a large conspiracy of people who wanted to make them lose. She actually believed the refs KNEW the history and even CARED! I was astounded by the ignorance and arrogance.:mad:

My favorite is when I am at gym an hour or more away and have been assigned the game by the association. A place I have never been and don't know a soul there and the visting fans yell: "Homer refs!"

Hey, I follow all of the local grade school standings from year to year. :D

And, if I heard this, I'd have told her to keep her comments to herself. If you're gonna be sitting at the table, you can save your editorial comments for postgame... :)

Actually, I said something more along the lines of, "Have you ever considered that maybe the reason everybody wants to see you lose is because of your shool's reputation for running up scores and arrogance?"

Now, that's funny! :D

And, probably the best thing for you to say!

I meant, as an official, I would have told her to keep quiet.

The table officials are partners, and we can't have them making editorial comments on the calls during the games. If its loud enough for the coach to hear, its loud enough for the players, fans, and officials to hear.

To me, this is akin to assistant coaches or other bench personnel complaining about calls, but worse in my judgment.

I have used in HS occassions where I have an administrator:

"tell the lady in blue she has 2 choices. Watch it, or read about it tomorrow. If she chooses the first, it must be done with less MOUTH!"

Gotta like those really well informed fans. As my pappy always said, at least the coach and the scorer were married and keeping it all in one family instead of corrupting 2 :D. Sounds like an annoying game, but there's not much to do as a clock operator.

Except to use the scorer's cell phone to call her boyfriend and complain about that last foul the refs called. :)

I know, I know... but I'm not officially Ms. Annoying Grammar girl, so I can err when ever I jolly well feel like it...

At least, I hope my sainted grandmother has better things to do in heaven than worry about my prepositions at the ends of sentences...

Well, I had a game a couple of years ago that felt like a sentence of some kind, and afterward the coach did ask me out (he was definitely very weird.). But you're right that hasn't happened since I got my AARP card... it's nice to have one less thing to worry about.

I wish the grammar rules committee would address that one. I end sentences with prepositions frequently and when I try to re-structure them to fit the grammatical rules, they are less understandable. I wonder what world those rule makers were living in. AAAAAHHH!
