Flagrant or Incidental?

You make the call:

Texas Tech vs Arkansas - Elbow to the face

Jurassic Referee Tue Dec 19, 2006 07:32pm

Intentional personal foul. Maybe even close to flagrant. He looked right at him before he bowed him, and got him right in the melon.

Methinks that one might get mentioned by whoever is evaluating.

Jmo.

Looks like no call by the official, so he must have thought incidental. One of those situations where you might have to know what else was going on during the game that led up to this action. Does look like he looked at him before the elbow and could be called for an intentional or flagrant without being questioned.

Looks like a Player Control foul to me. The player with the ball swung around, paused, and then threw the elbow up into the defenders jaw. I wouldn't have called it flagrant, but I wouldn't have left it alone either.

Intentional for sure. I get with the crew and decide whether flagrant.

I don't think they saw it. I'm sure they would have called something, even a player control foul.

What difference would that make? It's an elbow to the head. The only 2 choices that I know of would be incidental contact or a foul, no matter what happened before.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here, Ed. Please clarify.

Initially it was just a defender securing the ball with a bit of a turn using a pivot move, but then once the pivoting is complete he moves into the direction of the player using the elbow to make contact with the offensive player - for sure I got a foul on the offense - not flagarant, but intentional does the trick.

My thought was as to whether it would be a flagrant or not. Intentional or player control, yes, flagrant maybe.

Gotcha. If there was some history before the elbow, you could be a little more easily convinced that the act was deliberate and therefore maybe flagrant. That makes sense now.

I'm on dialup, so I can't watch, but if this is the same situation I posted about a few days back - I thought flagrant at the time (at least intentional).

That said, no call from JB Caldwell (might have been screened out) and the Texas Tech coaching staff didn't utter a peep. Makes me wonder if this looked worse on the tape than it did in the stadium, or if just no one saw it.

At game speed it probably looked a lot different, but from what I saw, DEFINITELY a PC Foul (at the least), more likely an intentional foul as he looked at the defender, so he knew he was there. I doubt I would give a flagrant though. Looks like the T was looking down the floor to see what was setting up instead of watching the play right in front of him. Look where is eyes are looking as the players separate at the end of the clip. I don't think he saw it.

Looked like he intended to hit him, but it also looked like a whole lot of acting by the defender after he got a glancing blow.

At game speed and from the back, I bet that the calling official was thinking flop...the lesson here is take the shot and don't try to sale it.
