Off topic - but pick one out of five

At my office, we have started circulating a "game" to get better acquainted with each other. We list five things about ourselves, four of them being true. The others have to guess which one isn't true. I thought it might be fun and entertaining (and possibly revealing) if some of the regulars here tried it. I would like to know a little more about some of you guys (like your debit card and PIN numbers). :p

Anyway, I'll start. I'll post the answer after a while.

Which one of these "facts" about me is not true?
1) I've been to the summit of Mt. Hood
2) I flunked my Army pre-induction physical
3) I'm related to Monica Lewinsky
4) My grandfather worked for Al Capone
5) I once was detained for questioning by the FBI

Remember, only one of these statements if false. Which one?

I'll bite...#4

3. My son is the sixth consecutive "first son"to be named "George."
4. I spent 6 months in southern Iraq.

I mean c'mon... what are the chances that you're related to Monica?

I guess in some way, we're all related to each other. Is that how you mean you're related to Monica? :D If not 3, I will say 5.

Here are mine:
1) I have received a speeding ticket trying to get to a game on time.
2) I was once involved with the Seminary, but I left.
3) There is royal blood in my ancestry.

I cannot PM you, but I AM that old. I was 9 in 1966. I'll go with the Harmon Killebrew for you.

Believe it or not, the false one is #1. Even though I've lived in Oregon for 35 years, I've never gone mountain climbing.

#2 - In 1969, right after college, I took my pre-induction physical and flunked due to a migraine condition.
#3 - Yes, we are very distantly related. My mother's family are Lewinskys. (I'm also related to that really hot actress, Gina Gershon, on my father's side)
#4 - I grew up in Chicago and my grandfather on my mother's side was a "bag man" for the Capone organization in the 20s and 30s - he collected and paid off on the numbers and sports betting. He finished his career in Tahoe and then Vegas working at the casinos. He really taught me all about gambling, including the "real" meaning of the point spread, which is not what most people think it is.
#5 - In 1968, I was visiting my then girlfriend at Purdue. There was some "campus unrest" at the time and I had out-of-state (Illinois) plates on my car. The FBI stopped me and took me into the local police station for questioning because I looked like a hippie. After checking with my girlfriend, they let me go. That was really strange because I actually was a "campus radical" at my school (Northern Illinois) and I published an "underground" newspaper. I guess their records weren't that thorough.

Nah - the records were right. J. Edgar Hoover just had a soft spot for you because of the fishnets!

Mark Padgett Wed Dec 20, 2006 08:54pm

I forgot some - all true:

1) I had dinner with Jimmy Carter
2) I worked parking cars at a mob-owned restaurant
3) I entered high school at age 12
4) My wife participated in the Miss Oregon pageant
5) My first car was a '65 Mustang

True. I called a game at age 20 at my alma mater Woodland HS in Maine. And I called my first game at Bellows Free Academy in St Albans VT last season where I attended my first two years at age 48.
2. I saw the very first NCAA hockey game played by the Maine Black Bears in the modern era.
True. I was enrolled at UMaine when the hockey arena was built and the first NCAA season was during my senior year in 1978-79.
3. I saw Mickey Mantle homer from both sides of the plate at Fenway at my first MLB game.
True. As a 9 year old I witnessed the Red Sox defeat the Yankees 5-3 at Fenway in June 1966. Mantle hit 2 HRs. One LH. One RH.
4. The first home I owned was on the first street of the first home my parents owned.True. My folks bought their first home in 1962 in St Albans VT. They [along with me] moved in 1973 to Maine. In 1981, I bought my first home in St Albans VT on the same street.
5. Before this year, I had never officiated a game without wearing glasses.

False. I started wearing glasses at age 26, after my first stint was over. I started with the contacts one month ago.

Texas Aggie Wed Dec 20, 2006 10:05pm

Guessing that #1 & #4 are somehow tied together, I will go for #3.

What the hay...

1. I've been at the last 6 football Bowl Games the University of Iowa has won.
2. I participated in Hands Across America.
3. My father invented Dairy Queen's "Mr. Misty Freeze."
4. I once worked a varsity basketball game wearing black women's short-(panty)hose.
5. I began my officiating career with shoulder-length bleached-blonde dreadlocks.

Ah, good old Dad. My grandparents did indeed own the original Dairy Queen in Muscatine, IA, and I was somewhat raised in a highchair by the register for a time, and he did indeed invent the Mr. Misty Freeze (this was, of course, long before I was born).

Wow! Very good! I thought for sure the ticket going to a game is a common occurance; and that the royal blood claim is a stretch.

I was in it, in downtown Chicago, IL (age 10). I lost the certificate, however, so you'll have to take me on my word.

I'm going to go obvious with you and say #5 - the wife one. So too obvious, it's obvious. Eh???

Unfortunately, no. Stuck in California this year. Besides, it may be a game more suited for not spending $1000 on a trip for, methinks.

So is your wife of Founding Father lineage, or what?

I've never met her, but I hope that if I ever do, we'd be kissing cousins. BTW - I went to HS with Jerry Colangelo's sister, FWIW.

BTW - here's a trivia question about Jerry Colangelo. When he was in HS, he was the #1 pitcher on the HS baseball team rotation. Who was #2?

Answer - Jim Bouton! That's right - back then (very late 50s), Jerry was rated better than a guy who went on to win World Series games with the Yankees. Strange how things turn out sometimes.

Also BTW - the HS is Bloom in Chicago Heights, IL. Also my alma mater. Jerry has stayed in touch with the HS and is the Honorary Chairman of the Scholarship Committee. He still remembers his roots. Cool.
