3 second violation...or let them play?
Big Guy, A1, goes into the paint. Thousand one..thosand two, receives a pass. I suspend count to see what he does. He takes one dribble on a move directly to the hoop. Naturally, he bounces it off his leg. Now we have six sets of arms, flailing at the ball, and A1 is still in the paint. Two or 3 more seconds elapse. Team B never gains control. Should this be ruled a 3 second violation??

By rule, yes.
But I would consider the game situation. If it's the 4th quarter in a close game and we haven't had a 3 second call all night, I'm not blowing one now. If it's early in the game, I may go ahead and get it.

I personally wait to see who gets possession. Team A gets it, and immediately goes up, I say/do nothing. Team A gets it, and Team A players get out of the lane, I say/do nothing. Team A gets it, and one or more Team A Players stay in the lane. TWEET! Got it.
Team B gets it. I say/do nothing. I know it may not be technically by rule, but game management works wonders. What I really get a kick out of though, is when a team puts up 3-4-5 shots in a row (all putbacks), and still have people in the paint. Coaches and fans are yelling "THREE SECONDS!" UH, folks, 3-second counts ends when a try for goal is attempted. Had a coach really push that issue one time. |
