It's round for a reason, coach...

I remember talking some time ago about a player rolling the ball down the court. Well, I saw it tonight. She rolled it past a couple defenders and around another before she picked it up. Opposing coach (ahead by 30 points) was jumping up and down and screaming (briefly, until I gave him The Look), but fortunately my partner knew the rule and nothing got called. I was thinking about it later, and realized that there was no team or player control (it was an inbound play) so there wouldn't have been any backcourt count. If they'd wanted to, they could have rolled it back and forth for the rest of the game. Couldn't they?

4-12-2: A team is in control of the ball.......while a live ball is being passed among teammates........

4-31: A pass is movement of the ball caused by a player who throws, bats, or rolls the ball to another player.

Yup, as long as they started each roll with a bat. No player or team control = no 10-second count.

Maybe instead of complaining the opposing coach should have told his or her players to go get the ball?
