OT or Game over??

Team is A leading 64-62 with under 10 seconds to play. They have the ball for an inbounds play in the backcourt. A11 after receiving the innbounds pass becomes confused and shoots at team B's basket. While the ball is in the air, the horn sounds. Ball goes in the hoop. Count it and go to OT or game over?

game over

game over, the period ends while the ball is in the air...however, this is not a try so the ball is dead immediately, and A11 gets to take some good natured ribbing on the way home LOL:eek:

is this true for FIBA rules?

In NFHS play a try must be at a team's own basket. Since this was not, it is no different than a pass and the ball becomes dead at the expiration of time. Therefore, no goal can be scored and the game is over.

And for the rest of the season, too.

It is.

16.1.1 A goal is made when a live ball enters the basket from above and remains within or passes through the basket.

The ball in this case is already dead when it enters the basket:

10.4 The ball does not become dead and the goal counts if made when:
• The ball is in flight on a shot for a field goal and [...] the game clock signal sounds for the end of the period.

But throwing the ball towards its own basket does not constitute "a shot for a field goal", according to:

15.1 A shot for a field goal [...] is when the ball is held in a player’s hand(s) and is then thrown through the air towards the opponents' basket.
(note that FIBA defines the basket that is attacked by a team as "the opponents' basket" and the basket which is defended by a team as "the team's own basket", art. 1.2.)

So dead ball - no basket - game over.
