Simultaneous Foul?
Had a situation occur yesterday in a tournament, want to know if it was handled correctly.
5.44 seconds left in game. Team A is ahead by 4 points, and will gain possession of the ball OOB because of a common foul by Team B. I am "T," my partner is "L" (2-person crew). I hand the ball to white OOB for the throw-in, and begin my count. As I get to 3 of my 5-second count, I have a foul by Team B right in front of me. At the exact same time, my partner has a foul by Team A about 30 feet down the floor. We call simultaneous fouls, report each foul to the scorer, and put the ball back at the POI - Team A throw-in. Is this correct, and can someone please provide a reference in the NFHS rules and casebook. Thanks. |
Looks to me like you got it right.
SIMULTANEOUS FOUL 4.19.10 SITUATION: B1 fouls dribbling A1 near the division line. At approximately the same time, A2 fouls B2 in the lane near Team A's basket. RULING: This is a simultaneous personal foul. B1 and A2 are charged with personal fouls. The ball shall be put back in play at the point of interruption. Team A is awarded a throw-in on the sideline nearest to where the ball was located when the fouls occurred. (7-5-9; 4-36) |
Good job. NFHS 4-34-1; 4-36-2b.

Thanks guys. My partner was going to go to the APA, but as he said it, I looked at him and shook my head no. We came together, talked, and I reminded him that the rule had changed . . . he agreed, and told each coach what we talked about and the rules that supported our decision. Coaches understood. Finished the game.
BTW . . . ball was inbounded, time runs out. Team A by 4. Thanks again for the help. |
