Hello every one, I am new to officiating and am taking a class on it at my local college. As a group project my group was assigned Womens basketball with the goal to find out how much the average pay is and what benifits are included (free travel to games, boarding ect.). I am having some problems finding any info on the NCAA division 1 and WNBA. Any information would be greatly apreciated. Thanks

Am I the only one concerned that a class to train new officials is researching pay and benefits? Especially at a level they won't sniff for a few years if they are serious about it?

The time spent chasing info that is not critical to the success of the class could be better spent studying rules and case situations IMO.

I agree the assign ment is pretty lame, but its what you have to do. I completely agree that officials shouldnt be in it for the money, if they wanted that they should go be a doctor or trial lawyer. Contributing to the sport should much more be the goal.

And they teach that in class. But since its a college class they need some work for people to do and this is one of the things along with watching games (at least 10) and seeing how the offcials cover it (posistioning,signaling, comunication, aperance ect ect) and interviewing some one who has ref'ed at at least high school level for several years. This class isnt to give in depth looks for a sport (it covers 5-6) less in depth so studying rules isnt the main factor.

I feel Im justified.

Newbie, I don't think anyone is saying that you shouldn't try to complete your assignment. You don't need to justify yourself to us. I think the concern is that it's not a particularly useful assignment. It seems like the only people who care a whole lot about the money officials make aren't officials (at least until they hit the pro level). There are much more important and interesting things about officiating than the pay.

I hope that along with investigating what the "big
dogs" make you get a chance to see what the "little dogs"
make, and then include the ratio of "big dogs" to "little
dogs". It's a lot like the entertainment business, most
actors/writers/musicians not even scraping by on their
art, a small handfull making a living and a very small
handfull making tons.

I already have found what youth, middle school age and high school refs make. That was easy, I came here looking for a little help on info that isnt posted often if ever on the web.

Now to be defensive about being defensive. I usualy post on fourms defending my ideas or ideals making my imediate reaction to a negitive post to post something of a counter point. I have no need to defend the assignment of the class. Again my deepest apologies.

What is your textbook for this course? If it is anything other than the NFHS/NCAA Rulebook I would hazard to guess it is a "Coach" teaching the course. :D

Three point shot at the buzzer, williebfree scores! Yeah its one of the coaches for the schools teams "teaching" not a class I would reccomend. But I need the credit hours and its too late to with drawl for refund and no mark on grade so oh well. :)

officiating taught by a coach! Kinda like taking a course
on brain surgery taught by a member of the meat cutters
union, no? Or a course on the law taught be a pickpocket.
Or a course on defensive driving taught be a drunk. Or

BTW, you mentioned that you already have info on game fees
up through high school games. You should be aware that
there's an incredible variability on these fees based on
location. The range for HS Varsity games alone goes from
around $30 per game to approaching $100 per game aross the
US.

This thread has been more helpful than I thought it would. Yeah, its not much of a course, I thought it would be better but no. I have to have the credit hours on my total this simester to stay insured. So no drop.

He doesnt teach like a coach,he teaches straight from the book. lol Should be easy grade boost. :)
