A question for those of you who do both HS and college

Just curious as to whether you like the four quarters or two halves systems better and why.

I like two halves. There is not so much end of period stuff you have to deal with. But I don't mind 4 qtrs either.

All_Heart Sat Nov 04, 2006 01:14pm

I like the halves. It is basically 2 less timeouts and 2 less last second shots.

Mark,
I like quarters better than halves, because of a built-in natural break, which can be used if you sense something needs to be fixed with regard to the game or the crew.

Don't care either way.

JRutledge Sat Nov 04, 2006 10:15pm

Two more last second shot situations to deal with. I personally like the 2 halves a lot better. The game gets into a flow and you do not have these interruptions in the game that in my opinion are unnecessary.

Peace

I don't think it really matters either way. Just like a fight - which is about to come on - either one can be a dud or a great game. Some college coaches will call all their timeouts so the breaks are about the same. Once the season begins, going to do a high school game goes really quick. A shorter court and 8 less minutes is a breeze.

I like the two halves better. If the game gets a good flow going that break between the 1st and 2nd quarter is a real drag. I've noticed the difference when working the Big Time tournament in the summers in Vegas. They play two 16 minute halves. The coaches rarely call a time-out in the first half near the eight minute mark.

Of course, I hate the media time-outs in the NCAA game for the same reason. They just break the rhythm of the contest.

I like the halves, it seem there is a better flow in the game.

Unless you use a shot clock, right? Some places use a shot clock for high school. I think in NY, the girls actually use women's college rules, so they have shot clocks.

I guess if you use shot clocks, you'd have the extra last-second stuff either way -- halfs or quarters. So I guess never mind.

The halves are nicer to work, more of a consistant flow to the contest - unless you get the 153 to 25 score and then it can be an almost permanent He**.
the shot clock rarely effects the flow of the game negativly - I think it actually helps, there are maybe two or three violations a game once the season gets rolling and with an experienced crew few problems on the floor a couple of table problems sometimes so there is a little more to be aware of but it keeps your head in the game.

At the lower levels the 1/4 system is perfect because the players and level of play for the most part need that break. An extra last second shot is not big deal to me.

Halves vs qtrs aint a big deal for me either way.

What gets me is how quickly 8 minutes goes by for a qtr compared to a 20 minute half.

I work HS and college. But what are these "quarters" that you're talking about?

There's a pretty dirty and very old joke that has as part of the punchline the question "And who gave you the damn quarter??!!!"*

Maybe someone will email it to you.

* Ans: "They all did."

That's a good one. I think it's in the "Jokes" thread in the General forum.
