I am a starting out official trying to learn the rules. Can somebody help me to understand the completeness of the traveling violation. Some parts of the rule book are hard for me to understand.

First step, find the pivot foot.

Second, know that it's not travelling just because the pivot foot is lifted. It's travelling if the pivot foot returns to the floor OR the player starts a dribble.

I personally think that this is the most missed call by beginning officials. THere's just too much else to look at and process when you're just starting out.

Also, remember that travelling can only occur when the player has CONTROL of the ball. If he just receives a pass and is bobbling (?) the ball while he takes a couple steps, it is NOTHING until he secures control. That one is missed often, even by veteran officials, perhaps because it looks so wierd and everyone else in the gym thinks it's a travelling violation.
