foul during free throw

Study guide question: A1 holds the ball and prepares to shoot a free throw.
A2 fouls B1. Ruling: team control foul

My immediate answer was false. There is no team control during a free throw, BUT I can find nothing which says there isn't. Is there team control or not? If so, I suppose this question is true. This is a new study guide on the lhsaa website. There are SEVERAL things there which I have never seen, heard of, or thought about. Some I consider good thought provokers, while others kinda seem like somebody was really trying to be obscure. Probably have more to follow.

You're wrong, JAR.

The ball is live during a free throw, as per NFHS rule 6-1-2(c). A1 has player control because he is holding a live ball inbounds, as per rule 4-12-1. Team A is in control because A1 has player control, as per rule 4-12-2. Team control continues until the ball is in flight on the try(FT attempt), as per rule 4-12-3(a) When A2 now fouls while his team(i.e. A1) still has team control, that foul meets the definition of a team control foul under rule 4-19-7.

The correct answer therefore is true.

Can anyone view this study guide? Could you post a link to it?

If the foul is committed before the ball is released, as a team control foul...does that kill the free throw?

Yes. It's no different than a similiar situation on a try. Report the foul, clear the lane, shoot the FT(s) and then award the ball to B. This is a false double foul.

What BktBallRef said.....rule 6-7-4 is the reference.

You might also look at rule 4-12 (pg 30) and the illustrated book, pg 76.
