Survey Q - Toughest Call and why?

I am SURE we've had this conversation before but what they heck.....

Straight from the OHSAA survey....

What is the the most difficult call or decision to make and why you feel it is the most difficult 'call or judgment' to make.

I think I am going with Block Charge only because the contact can be severe and the understanding of how we make the call just isnt there with fans and coaches.

Or 5 seconds but only because I always forget what number follows 4!

I used to not believe this, but I have in the last few years changed my mind. I think Goaltending and Basket Interference are by far the most difficult calls. The reason they are so difficult is they do not happen very often. They often catch you off guard. Depending on your angle you may not get the call right or do not see the play very well. Even when you work many varsity games you might go a season and not have one of these calls. Block/Charge calls happen much more often and if you referee the defense these calls can be so easy to make. They also do not catch you completely off guard.

Anything that doesn't happen very often is difficult to feel confident about, but of course some are easier than others. I agree that BI and GT are the most difficult of those infrequent calls (in 8 years of girls ball, I've never had one!) .

But for me the most difficult call to make is the judgment between incidental contact and an illegal screen. (Ray, are you listening? Here's your A/D thing!)

Aside from the basketball itself, I find it miserably uncomfortable to call anthing that the fans are screaming for. I hate to give them the satisfaction.

I would have to agree with Rut and z on this one. I think Rut might've hit it on the head when he said it's a call you might not see all season, and when you do, it comes by surprise.

Some of thes kids are pretty smooth with palming the basketball.

2. That pull up/fade away jumper, that always seems to end up in leads lap, with the defender coming from the opposite side of the shooter. You have a good angle and then that little fade away will sometimes leave you too close and blocked with few options to move for a look.

3. The hand or ride by the defender on the dribble, jump, gather and jump stop move. It really tests the patient whistle to let the play happen.

BI/GT and Travelling are by far the hardest calls.

I don't think defensive goaltending is that tough, personally. BI is unquestionably a nightmare.

More and more the tough calls are loose ball plays in terms of held balls and/or fouls in getting to the ball or trying to get a hold of it (i.e. reaching around).

but the hardest call for me personally is when I have to empty the gym because of idiots who are not there because of the game. Admitedly this does not happen very often, which is probably what makes it a hard decision. But usually the landing of an object on the floor is a reliable indicator that I have to act.
Following this, I would agree with all who already mentioned BI and goaltending.

I agree with most all the answers, but what I really have a difficult time with is when a team that is out matched and out played and the coach tells me or my partners that we missed that one. I have a difficult time, where I feel bad for the team, but I feel like shutting the coach up and tell him to coach and not ref. Maybe if you focused on the game and not the ref's you would be in a better situation.
