Changes to Gym floor

We are completely replacing our gymnasium floor... Pulled out the old, down to the cement and putting in new.

It is a church gym that gets a lot of basketball play. Decent sized, 50 x 84 feet. There is integrated into the court is a volleyball court (center line of BBall court will be Center line of volleyball court) with holes drilled into floor & Cement for Vball poles, we just drop them in deep holes)

In the past vball lines were dark red, and the center line for Vball was about 4 inches offset from Center line of Basketball, and it was easy for players and refs to confuse the two. We have solved that by moving the vball holes, and it now will line up with center line. I have also asked for vball lines to be in white or yellow, so they are easy to distinguish from black bball lines.

Court will have to stay exactly where it is, as we are not moving baskets, but other than that the floor is a literally blank. I wondered if any on this group had seen anything in the paint/line schemes that would be worth considering in the many gyms that you have all seen?

Just mining for good ideas... since we can make changes easilly now.

In my expereince, I've seen Basketball outlined in black, Volley ball in white. It also varies on some schools also use school colors, but Volley ball has been white.

Depending on your lighting, white lines can get lost in the glare from across the court. I'd recommend going with a darker color (like red) that will still contrast with black basketball lines.

I recommend a large Jayhawk in the middle.

May I suggest forgoing lines for basketball and just using a belt for out of bounds and using permanent 2" by 2" square floor markers for the intersections of the volleyball court bourdary lines and using removable gym tape for volleyball season.

What? That would be a pain in the neck.

The lines for basketball court and volleyball court can very easily co-exist. The biggest issue is sharing the centerline. Once that is set, the rest is easy. Just make the centerline the basketball color (usually black) and make the rest of the volleyball court red or gold or blue or white...doesn't matter.

Pain in the neck??? We're talking six pieces of tape attached to predetermined markings once a year, not rocket science.

It's incidental contact...until the referee decides it is a foul.:)

Being a church gym, my guess is that this gym is used for several activities beyond basketball and volleyball. Also volleyball probably isn't played strictly in one season. That tape isn't going to stay down more then a few weeks. Someone would be putting tape down several times per year.

I would never plan to regularly use tape on a floor when it's being repainted anyway. Do the job right. There are thousands of gyms across the US that have both sets of lines on their floor (and some with several more sets) that have no trouble with them.

The only thing about marking a coaching box is next year they will change the dimensions yet again.

I agree, paint 'em on. Just make sure you use contrasting colors. Otherwise some hapless rookie might accidently let a player shoot freethrows from the volleyball line. At least the crowd seemed to think I did. I was too nervous to notice ;)
