Hello everyone!

As most of you know, I am seasoned Basketball Official. I have decided to "heed the call" and help fill the big void of VB Officials. Unfortunately, I have not observed an "organized" VB match in years. Despite this "shortcoming", I am willing to put forth the effort to learn the nuances of Volleyball officiating.

I have in my possession the NFHS Rules and Casebook. However, I would like input from the experienced officials.

I am looking for any information that would be helpful with game management strategies, understanding the flow the game, etc...

I suggest that you post your response on the VB Forum. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat. I guess I'll have to start browsing through the VB pages. Man, I hate being the newbie! :)

I'm with you too! In Michigan, there's an approved Volleyball Local Officials Association . . . the Eastside Volleyball Officials. Prior to the season, they host a variety of clinics and have monthly meetings as well. They enlist the aid of several seasoned veterans and even get a couple of High School teams to play some games so the new (and old) officials can get some on-the-floor experience. They even arranged to video-tape the session for your home use. You may want to check with your own State High School association to see if there's something similar in your neck of the woods.

I reffed some fairly competitive church league VB a few years ago.

Here's my advice:

Know the rules!
Know your primary areas of responsibility!
watch as many games as you can to get the feel!
Sound familiar?

It's the spike-block plays that are the fastest with a lot of people at the net and possibility of multiple hits.

Maybe we will finally get some good rules discussion going on volleyball.

The names are the same.

But they should be changed to protect the innocent.
I cannot believe what I am reading here.
Further, I cannot beilieve I may have to do this in a year or two.
Any Back Judges needed?

I did VB last year, and will this year, too, if my "real job" doesn't interfere. As a very nem newbie, here's my advice. The first thing to really get a handle on is the lift. I took more grief about this than anything else. Next thing, don't ever climb up onto that funky little platform if it wiggles at all. That thing gives me the willies. It's a lot more scary than doing bball on a cement court outside. If you can, try to do a least a few matches as the down official at a fairly high level of play. My personal opinion is that the spread between good and bad is a lot greater in volleyball than in basketball, and moving up can be a real culture shock, not just a minor adjustment. Keep exercising to be prepared for basketball. VBall doesn't help with the tonin'!!!

I'll be providing questions, not answers. :)

Yes. Our BJ is taking a class on Thursday night, so we'll need a Bj for JV games. ;)

Thanks for all your input! Keep it coming....

I am starting at the Jr. High level. As stated earlier, I am an EXTREME novice...
