What's the rulebook say?

An unusual situation.

As A1 is passing the ball to A2. The referee and A2 colide and A2 hits the deck, the ball sails out of bounds.

In this instance, the ref gives the ball to Team A on the sidelines because he claimed that the colision was his fault and he didn't want to penalize Team A for his mistake.

I didn't have a problem with the call, because it seemed like the fair thing (even to a parent for Team B), but I was curious as to what the rule book had to say about this situation, if anything. I would suspect that the ref is part of the floor and it would be the same as if A2 slipped and fell on her own, but that is total P.F.A. on my part.

And since I don't ref, and I don't own a rulebook. I thought I ask you fine people.

On a side note, does anyone know if their is an online rulebook that can be accessed for free. On top of being lazy, I'm also cheap...how 'bout that for a combination. :D

Thanks.

The referee was very.....nice.

He was also very.....wrong. As you said, officials are just part of the floor.

A1 was the last to touch the ball in bounds. It's B's ball.

The high school rules- NFHS - aren't on-line anywhere. The NCAA basketball rules are...you can find them at ncaa.org.

The high school rules are on line at NFHS.org. I am not sure if you have to be a member of the NFHS to access the area or not. I do know that you have to be registered.
