Correctable Error?

B1 fouls A1 with Team A leading by a point with 7 secs remaining in the game. It is Team B's 9th team foul and the official incorrectly verbally awards A1 with two free throws. Team B rebounds the missed free throw attempt when the error is discovered. What do you do?

Read case play 2.10.1 Situation D. Team A got their merited free throw and team B rebounded the miss. Give Team B the ball and continue on. Team A isn't going to be very happy, however, if they made no attempt to rebound the miss due to the official's incorrect info.

Was this error due to the scorer giving the official bad info from the table? If so, flog the scorer.

If this was due to the official's lack of attention, flog all the officials. The lead official should never release the ball to the shooter until he/she has received a confirmation signal from his/her partner(s) indicating how many free throws will be shot. This error won't happen if even one of the partners is paying attention.

It's always the official's fault ;)

This is why it is my personal practice when I'm the 'R' to check the table after the 1st and 3rd quarters, especially in games where team fouls aren't displayed on the scoreboard. Then I can keep the count in my head during the 2nd & 4th quarters. Something one of more successful mentors advocates and it's helped to keep me and my crew out of the soup in the more than one occassion.

If both teams go for the rebound, then B keeps the ball.

But if the officials' error results in one team or both teams NOT going after the rebound, then the game is resumed with the AP arrow. There is a case play or website interpretation concerning this.

That's correct. Case Play 8.6.1
A1 is about to attempt the first of a one-and-one free-throw situation. The administering official steps in and erroneously informs players that two shots wil be taken. A1's first attempt is unsuccessful. The missed shot is rebounded by: (a) B1, with all other players motionless in anticipation of another free throw; (b) A2, with all other players motionless in anticipation of another throw; or (c) B2, with several players from both teams attempting to secure the rebound. The officials recognize their error at this point. RULING: In (a) and (b), the official's error clearly put one team at a disadvantage (players stood motionless and didn't attempt to rebound). Play should be blown dead immediately and resumed using the alternating-possession procedure. In (c), both teams made an attempt to rebound despite the official's error and had an equal opportunity to gain possession of the rebound. Play should continue.
