Defending Packer?

Jim Rome, in discussing the hard time that Packer and Nantz gave the chair during the selection show, said, "If you give takes, sometimes you're just going to be wrong. I'm not going to take down Billy Packer just for this."

UNREAL!!

That take was HUGE....Let's just remember that talking heads are just talking heads. Billy Packer's job is to create contoversy by stating an opinion. Otherwise people don't listen/watch. Remember the silent football game several years back. Jets and someone but no announcers just extra graphics with stats. Notice they haven't done it again?

it's one thing to state an opinion and be wrong (see Packer/Nance on the selection show re: "mid-major" teams), but it is ENTIRELY UNACCEPTABLE to be the color analyst in a game and tell me the defense is playing a 2-3 zone when they're actually playing man-to-man.

Packer just simply says TOO MANY things that are wrong - whether opinion or fact.

He MUST have "dirty pictures" on someone at CBS to keep his job....Give me Jay Bilas, Bill Rafferty, Len Elmore, or even Bill Walton - but not Packer!!!!!!

Give me Raftery...at least he knows whether teams "open up man-to-man!!!" or in a "2-3 zone with man-to-man principles!!!"

Jim Rome should know that Packer has lost a step since Wake Forest days and is relatviely easy to defend. Of course, Romie thinks Skip Clueless is an immortal.

Papa Joe Chevalier

On a side note, Packer went on Papa Joe Chevalier's show at the start of the tourney and said "The best 64 teams" should be in the tourney. Forget the mid-majors, etc."

So today, Papa said, "We'll have to slap packer around a little today and hope that in light of the first 60games, he's changed his mind a bit." Or words to that effect.

He'll never come around no matter how much he is slapped. Here's an idea, Billy, since you seem to like to wallow in history, how about no conference gets more than one bid?

Well, to a degree, haven't I heard Billy Packer argue that the tournament actually begins 2 weeks before selection sunday, with the conference tournies? That is the one shot that every school has to get into the big dance. Win your conference tourney, and you get in to the big dance. I guess that limiting the tourney to these 34 teams would end a lot of debate about who deserved to get in and who didn't. Not to mention cut down on all the time wasted in forums like this debating who should and shouldn't be in there and bashing idiotic TV analysts.

Except Packer would say there should be exceptions for the major conferences. Wouldn't he? :D

An automatic bid obtained before or after those meaningless conference tournaments?

Jim Rome said something once? Usually he beats it to death.

He says it over and over.

Again.

And again.

Ad infinitum.

Over and again.

And again.
