Is Your Whistle Clean?

Do you clean your whistle? Can you boil it?

I was in a hurry after my last game. While changing, I accidentally put my dirty socks in the pouch that I keep my whistles. I don't really want to put it back in my mouth. Should I just buy a couple more, or is there a good way to clean them?

I don't clean them often.

No you can't boil them, they will crack.

Soak them in mouthwash.

mplagrow Sat Mar 18, 2006 02:14pm

Boiling them for about half a minute is fine, at least in my experience.

Corndog89 Sat Mar 18, 2006 02:39pm

After every game I wash mine with hot tap water and dish detergent and then put it in listermint.

The New Guy Sat Mar 18, 2006 02:45pm

Soaking it overnight in Listerine has worked for me. Gets rid of the germs and freshens your breath during the game.

If that doesn't work and you're really worried about them being mixed with your sweaty socks, the $3 for a new one is your best bet.

Toss your whistles in a small cup and pour enough rubbing alchol over them to cover them. Swirl and let sit overnite. Take out the next morning, rinse with water, shake out, blow once and your ready to go, sanatized better than when you recieved it brand new in the package!

Make sure everyone in the house is awake before you blow the whistles, though.

Waiting untill everyone is awake takes all the fun out of it. Plus when you get to work your boss will never know if you just cleaned your whistle or if you stopped for a quick "Irish Coffee" on the way!

Run 'em through the dishwasher.

The dishwasher followed by a soak in mouthwash works great for me. I may add the rubbing alcohol too to get it super clean. I may never have to buy another whistle !

Can't we just soak them in Absolut & rinse them out with vermouth?

:)

My buddy told me that he has a little tuperware dish that he carries in his gym bag to put his whistles in.

Thanks to all. Great information.

If you were to stick your dirty socks in your mouth for a minute you'd never notice if the whistle was dirty or not!:D But, as for buying more, can you never really have too many whistles? I have 4 or 5 classics, 2 cmgs, 2 mini cmgs, and one 1 acme tornado.

Tried this a few weeks ago and that is what happened.

Why couldn't you have posted this BEFORE I attempted this? :)

I keep mine in a small plastic dish. Before each game I take a small alcohol prep gause, the ones they use to clean a cut before you put a band-aid on, and clean my whistle.

the vodka thing may have been a joke but that is really how i wash mine. got it from a tip here long ago...

Rita C Thu Mar 23, 2006 02:27am

You've got to be kidding!

If I were to clean my whistle, and I never have, I wouldn't use more than running water.

Sheesh, they are your germs, they are already in your mouth. You have antibacterial qualities to your spit.

You guys have really bought into the antibacterial hysteria.

The best way to clean a whistle is to simply leave it in a glass of Coke for 15 minutes. You have to use Coke Classic, not that watery diet coke crap that snussies drink. You also have to be careful to remove your whistle right around the 15-minute mark; after that, they will start to dissolve.

By the 15-minute mark, all of the accumulated gook inside your whistles will have been washed out and will be floating on the surface of your coke. You simply remove your whistle and lightly pat it dry with a cotton wash cloth. Then you pick the hunks of gook out of the coke and eat 'em like trail mix, followed by washing your snack down with rest of the coke.

Larry the Cable guy recommended that procedure in his book on officiating. "Git-R-Done".

It's true; it's true........
